Date: Saturday December 16th, 2017
Venue: the Hard Luck Bar in Toronto, Ontario

The first band of the night was a local act called Ancress. They weren’t too bad “arty” hardcore. Their bass had an interesting tone. The best part of their set was the droning interludes between songs.
I’ve heard of Child Bite somewhere but I can’t remember. They were a good noise rock band comparable to the Jesus Lizard. Some of their songs had really cool riffs.
Big|Brave were the reason I came out tonight. I wasn’t too high on their new album since it was just three similar sounding drone songs but live it all worked much better. It was just a barrage of noise and feedback and I like that.

I only know Unsane from that video they had of people wiping out on skateboards twenty years ago. I stuck around though because I’ve heard they sound like Today is the Day, even though I was really craving French Fries. They reminded me more of the aggressive side of Helmet but way...way better. Actually, back in the day people who don't listen to much heavy music would tell me that Helmet were the heaviest band in the world. Helmet were and are heavy but I imagine that this is what they heard when they heard Helmet. Anyways, Unsane had some f***ing sick, meaty riffs going on and I quickly forgot about how hungry I was. They were really good. The worst song was actually the most popular song: Scrape, the song with the aformentioned video that was people falling off skateboards.

So that likely ends my concert treks for 2017. I don’t know if I’ll go to any more shows this year. But I topped myself this year and saw thirty-four shows and one hundred and two bands (although I don’t know if I’d count the Zelda and Final Fantasy orchestras as “bands”, so I didn’t). It was a pretty good year overall. I saw a lot of bands no one has heard of. But I found myself getting really bored of metal shows towards the end of the year. It’s all starting to all sound the same to me. That Haujobb show I saw in October really changed my outlook on what I think is fun at a show too. We’ll see what 2018 brings?
