And no, I'm not talking about bootleg toys, more in the sense of "This is guy you got back in the day when you couldn't get the real guy". I ask this because I've been watching a LOT of World Class Championship Wrestling lately, and just came upon "Cocoa Samoa", who looks for all the world like somebody tried to clone Jimmy Snuka, but f***ed it up. Another example would be Buddy Landell for Ric Flair.

Jack Pfefer, who killed kayfabe in major newspapers in the 1930s (before everyone somehow forgot) used to have whole shows with sound-alikes - Bruno Sanmartino, Bummy Rogers, Hobo Brazil, etc.
The Rock N Roll Express were originally created to be a cheap version of the Fabulous Ones; then of course there's Demolition, Powers of Pain, the Maxx Brothers, Blade Runners and all the other guys promoters hired when they couldn't get the actual Road Warriors. Cpl Kirchner was absolutely intended to be the new Sgt Slaughter when Sarge bolted from the WWF.

The Renegade in wcw, lol he actually defeated Arn Anderson. That's a crime against wrestling.
Early Dr Tom Prichard was a Piper rip off.
Even though they drew money on their own right, I see the Fantastics as a second rate Rock and Roll express.
Superstar Billy Graham said he was happy to influence Flair and Hogan, but the only one he disliked was Jesse Ventura because he stole everything from him.
Troy Graham in Memphis as the Dream Machine. A guy with similar build and who could cut promos like Dusty. Jarrett and Lawler actually had the motherf***er imply that he was Dusty Rhodes under the mask.
But the absolute worst are Riot Control and Macho Warrior Ric Hogan.

What a complete hack this guy is! I get being a faux shill or tribute act, but this guy has claimed at conventions open mic sessions that he remembers being in the ring at Wrestlemania 6 and what Hogan said to him! This is while he is sitting next to the real Jim Duggan and the real Rowdy Piper who were actually at the event. The real Warrior never claimed anything he hadn't done or didn't believe in, whatever you may think of him as a person, and certainly not someone else's career as his own. |

I guess Giant Kimala II/Uganda/Botswana Beast fits into this too. A mainstay of AJPW for well over a decade and was probably best known in the U.S. for a brief stint in ECW as Uganda at the back end of the nineties. You could also make a claim for him being an official 'tribute' as he has teamed with the real Kamala on multiple occasions too.  |
