If they wanted to “protect” Sting in the loss, there were better ways than a run in by people who were 15 years behind the times. And it would have been better done to have Trips win by heelish shenanigans only to get chased out if the ring by Sting getting his heat back instead of them shaking hands like the prior several months of build meant nothing.

Understand it was probably designed around both performers' limitations and that there might be some agendas at play with what went into the mechanics and all, but it was rather odd all-out. As mentioned, the execution deviated suddenly from "Vigilante Sting vs The Authority" to "WWF vs WCW" to "I respect you, Captain Sledgehammer." That's strange enough, but there was this weird air to it where there was a hard pivot from a relatively straight-faced angle to whatever played out having more in common with X7's Gimmick Battle Royale in terms of it being a nostalgia-novelty-sideshow act.

Got to say I really enjoyed the show when clearly a lot didn't but I'm shocked how many people are down on the Brock/Reigns match? It was awesome, dudes beat the hell out of each other and we got a great finish with Seth.

Also, while I get the NWO were all stars, it made no sense for them to help Sting out apart from maybe Nash because of the Wolfpac (though I let this slide because most of Sting's buds wouldn't have the same impact). Well they were going to have Lex Luger help Sting but, there was a whole list of problems. First, Luger didn't know if Vince could afford to pay him. Then after they straightened that out the shirt they gave him was to tight. Finally, after getting a shirt that fits, he was all set to help Sting but, the door was locked and he couldn't get out. So, they went with the NWO instead. Bravo, this is genius. The only thing I liked about that match was Hogan being attacked from behind act selling it only to realise it was X-Pac that knocked him over.

The commetary I found to be the most disgusting. JBL and Cole both came across as company cock suckers, although im sure they were fed those lines "Maybe Sting wasn't really that good" and "we win again". Wonder if they said those lines through gritted teeth.
Would it have been better to get somebody who represented ECW and make it a triple threat match, the three companies battling it out? Could buh buh Ray Dudley be that guy (and D`von, spike and a few other Dudley s do a run in?) Maybe RVD or ecws last champ Rhyno? Let the ecw take the fall and protect both sting and hhh?

The laughter as he got murdered was kind of awesome, even if I did want Brock to still murder him.

Once again, for the people in the back.......
Sting wanted to lose, he went into the match believing it was going to be his last match, and he is of the belief that you always put over the other guy in your last match.
He has said this in interviews, he had no idea he would have another match.
Sting wanted to lose.
Which is the only thing that matters.

I think I would be less sour on the result if the announce team hadn't spent the entire match going on about WCW vs WWE, especially when Sting's first promo had him say right off the bat that it had nothing to do with WCW as that company had been gone for 15 years and he'd moved on. That more than anything annoyed me the most. They even had that line in the vignette before the match... as for him actually losing... Unlike Hall and especially Hogan, Sting never seemed to get hung up on the wins and losses. Should have won? Probably. But it's not like anything changes one way or the other. I also wouldn't be surprised if it turned out the handshake was a Sting idea.

And as the people in charge, they should have told him he was wrong, and that they weren't going to do it that way. That Mania was a giant pile of garbage anyway, but this match completely deflated everyone I knew that watched it. WWE is always spouting that line about "listening to their crowd", and this is one of the most glaring examples to prove that is complete shit. f*** what Sting wanted, the crowd wanted to see him win.

That match almost ruins the whole card for me. I mean the Main Event helped, but this just killed it. Classic WWF booking would have had Sting go over, but for some reason, we got the Heel going over in the feel good blow off show of the year.

Honestly, I loved the angle they were going for with Sting fighting against the Authority in the same way he was against the nWo, that’s a much better angle than “Man on top has hard on for reminding everyone he won a war nobody gave a shit about anymore”. ...until the nWo ran in anyway. In the story of the match, dude said the nWo cost him his job since they killed the company. The f*** would he accept their help for?! Nostalgia or not, it could have worked if they weren’t haphazard with the damn build.

Yeah, but when the other guy is a retired main eventer, going out on your back isn't necessary. Also, the loss isn't half as bad as the handshake.

I don't mind Sting losing since he thought it would be his last match, yet if they were gonna have a bunch of run in's I woulda hoped WCW Face legends like Rick Steiner,DDP,Booker T etc. helped him instead of his Kayfabe NWO enemies Hall/Nash,since it would have made more sense if Hall/Nash helped HHH cause of the clique.

Maybe Sting doesn’t have your ridiculous f***ing egos and just wanted a good pay day and a nostalgia trip for the fans? Ever think about that?

The match was a great nostalgia trip and a lot of fun but the wrong guy won.

Kind of sounds like "uhh ah, I meant to do that! Yeah.." sort of deal. Its HHH, not some up-and-comer
