Let's see what the random generator picks tonight...
...Women’s Extreme Wrestling...
...nope, I’m not ready for that just yet.
* hits “resubmit”*
Yay, Ring of Honor. My wife sticks her hand in the box of DVDs and picks out:
Ring of Honor “Contention”
June 12th, 2009
From Sports Network & Fitness Inc. in Manassas, Virginia
Commentators: Lenny Leonard and Dave Prazak
Jay Briscoe is going to whup Davey Richards’s ass tonight for taking his brother Mark out.
The Embassy (Jimmy Rave, Claudio Castagnoli and Ernie Osiris) w/Prince Nana vs. Colt Cabana, Necro Butcher & Grizzly Redwood
This was not the best match. It was mostly comedy. That’s fine for Colt Cabana and Grizzly Redwood but I want to see Jimmy Rave and Claudio wrestle and Necro Butcher get hit with stuff. He did eat a fly though.
Winners: Colt Cabana, Necro Butcher & Grizzly Redwood
Alex Payne vs. Shawn Spears
This was a decent “who the hell are these guys”? match. There even was a “who are you chant?” which was followed up with an always edgy “ask your mom” from Shawn Spears. The crowd was really on Shawn Spears during this match. Shawn Spears who now goes by “Tye Dillinger” and if he were to show up in any independent promotion today would have the virgin neckbeards eating out of the palm of his hand.
Winner: Shawn Spears
Ric Flair comes out and puts “the Ring of Honor” over. Then he basically just makes fun of the fact that there are no women at the show. $10,000 well spent if you ask me.
Kenny King w/Rhett Titus vs. Brian Danielson
This match was weird. Rhett Titus got on the mic midway and starting singing (and grinding) to his own theme music. It served as a distraction but it was different. This match was okay. Just “okay”.
Winner: Brian Danielson
The Young Bucks vs. Kevin Steen & el Generico
I’ve seen this match before on the first Young Bucks compilation that Ring of Honor put out. It’s actually a really good match even though the Bucks get fed to Steen and Generico for most of it. It’s good to see the Bucks have a competitive match once and awhile. Recent years haven’t allowed them to be as good as they can be.
Winners: Kevin Steen & el Generico
Good show of respect between the two teams afterwards.
Promo for the Ring of Honor webstore.
Alex Payne is backstage and he says he’s no whipping boy. He’s coming for Silas Young.
Promo for the Ring of Honor Wrestling Academy.
Nigel McGuinness comes out and tells everyone that his arm is as good as it’s ever going to be. He says he’s been waiting for the right opportunity to come back. He knows Jerry Lynn is living in fear as Ring of Honor champion. He doesn’t think Tyler Black, Brian Danielson or Austin Aries are the men to get the job done. But he thinks he is. Austin Aries comes out and tells him that when he wins the title tomorrow night he (Nigel) will get the sixth or seventh crack at him. Then he announces that D’Lo Brown will have his back tonight...D’Lo Brown...? This is the second show in two nights for two different promotions, six years apart from one another where D’Lo Brown has come out and I’m wondering “why”? (The first was MLW ‘Hybrid Hell’ from 2003, which I watched last night)
Austin Aries vs. D’Lo Brown vs. Eddie Edwards w/Shane Hagadorn vs. Roderick Strong
This wasn’t a bad match at all either. In fact I’d go as far to say it’s the best match I’ve ever seen D’Lo Brown in. And I’ve probably seen a hundred of his matches. Granted most were less than five minutes long and ended up with someone’s ass in someone else’s face. This was a little short though. They could’ve gone ten more minutes.
Winner: Roderick Strong
D’Lo got a huge pop on his way out.
Jimmy Jacobs vs. Sonjay Dutt
This was a match. Jimmy Jacobs is only really good for one thing (getting thrown around) and there was none of that here. Both of these guys are better off facing other guys on this card who were better off facing other guys on this card. Like, put Sonjay Dutt against Jimmy Rave and Jimmy Jacobs against Necro Butcher and you’d have two matches could be cool. Although I probably say Jimmy Rave against Sonjay Dutt on TNA back in the day.
Winner: Jimmy Jacobs
Promo for Proving Ground Night 2 (which I have but didn’t get pulled out of the box tonight. It looks good).
Davey Richards w/Shane Hagadorn vs. Jay Briscoe
This was a good match. But I’m pretty drunk and on holidays so...MAN UP, MOTHERf***ER!
Winner: Jay Briscoe
Immediately afterwards Eddie Edwards jumps in and attacks Jay Briscoe but Kevin Steen and el Generico run in for the save.
Promo for Eliminating the Competition. Which was ironically not a WWE show but a Ring of Honor show.
Tyler Black vs. Jerry Lynn
This was actually a really good match. I don’t like Jerry Lynn that much but it was nice to see him wrestle someone who wasn’t a numptie. To often I see him against “former WCW jobber #7” or “undercard ECW guy #3”. I need to see more “good” Jerry Lynn matches. Too bad it was a non-title match.
Winner: Tyler Black
Austin Aries comes out and thanks Tyler Black for making his job tomorrow night at Manhattan Mayhem III that much easier.

Bonus Features:
From the Hunt Begins on April 17th, 2009
LuFisto vs. Daizee Haze
This wasn’t too bad. It had a weak finish though. I bet LuFisto can work a good, stiff brutal HxCx match but this wasn’t the match.
Winner: Daizee Haze
Thirty minutes of promos that I don’t have time for.
_______________________________________________________________
This show was just “okay”. They kept mentioning Manhattan Mayhem III happening the night after this so I think a lot of the matches on this show suffered since they didn’t want to risk the bigger show suffering the following night. The Young Bucks verses Kevin Steen and el Generico match was very good though and is worth seeing. And the main event was very good for a non-title match.
The crowd at this show was a bit much. I thought Nigel McGuinness’ promo, for example, was really good. But a few members of the crowd kept yelling shit out. Some of it was funny but a lot of it was “shut the f*** up”. No wonder I haven’t seen many shows from “Man Asses”.
The Snapmare was very over tonight. I’m not sure what the deal with that was?
