Contra III: The Alien Wars (SNES) Contra Hardcorps (Genesis) Alien vs. Predator 2000 Classic (PC) Mike Tyson's Punch-Out!!! (NES) Castle in the Darkness (PC) Battletoads (NES/Genesis/Game Boy) Nam 1975 (Neo Geo) R-Type (Arcade) Rayxanber II / III (PC Engine CD-ROM) Kid Icarus (NES) I'm surprised to see kid Icarus on your list. It was the second game I ever owned, after super Mario 1. It wasn't easy but I would regularly finish it. Unlike almost ever other NES game ever. My vote goes to dragons lair. Or that f***ing "time traveller" arcade game! By Dragon's Lair I assume yall are referring to the arcade version. To me it wasn't never that hard. Sure it took at least 20 bucks or maybe closer to 30 to beat it the first time. But once you memorize the patterns it is easy. For Laserdisc based arcade games the hardest to me were either Cliff Hanger or Thayer's Quest.

For me as a kid it was TMNT. Damn seaweed Funny thing is...that's the easiest level. I had it on the commodore 64. Always found it the hardest at least to that stage. To my memory I only beat it once. Dyspraxic fingers don't do precision well.

In teems of awful games, Bart vs. The Space Mutants.
In difficulty... Contra series, especially Hard Corps.

I've tried some of the harder games from my childhood and been able to get through them, but Bart Vs The Space Mutants is such a failure of design, physics, playstyle and logic that it's near impossible to even want to beat, let alone try to. Bart Vs. The Space Mutants has some of the worst controls I've ever experienced in a video game. I think run and jump used the same button. I only made it to the second level a handful of times, never got any further than that. I didn't own it though, only rented it a bunch of times. It had some cool ideas but the execution was terrible. Yeah, the control system in that game was f***ed. Too many actions to perform for the limited number of buttons on the NES control pad. I'm going to guess the Sega Genesis/Mega Drive version was better because of the extra button... but given the nature of licensed games back then, I'd not be surprised to learn nothing was mapped to that button.

There are hard games that are still fun that I never beat but did not mind playing over and over (Zelda II, Contra, Punch-Out, TMNT,Ninja Gaiden).
There are also abominations I kept playing because I would be damned to have that shitty game get the best of me (Karate Kid in particular and Street Fighter 2010 as well).
Then there are hard games that I could routinely beat but loved all the same (Castlevania and Gauntlet Legends for the arcade).

Still haven't got past the super early game in Dark Souls 2. Like 30 minutes into the game (PS4 Remaster) a red phantom/ghost thing shows up and kills me. I can't get past it. Have never beaten a boss.
Platinum'd Bloodborne and beat DS3 multiple times. Can't even advance on Dark Souls 2.

Had no clue Contra and Super C were considered hard. Even before we knew the Konami code we still managed to beat Contra a few times.

Contra: The Alien Wars was fairly easy for me once I figured out the patterns of the enemies and boss battles. Only thing that gave me some difficulty at first was the overhead levels.

i'd say some of the older games that once you got to the end of the game it made you go back to the beginning to beat it again like bubble bobble.

I’ve never played them, but I always hear the Diablo games can be a bitch. I've put a lot of time into Diablo 1, beating it several times. It's fair and not too difficult, especially if you crawl thoroughly through each level of the dungeons and 'level up' your character before proceeding to fight the boss enemies that appear every few levels.

Dyspraxic fingers don't do precision well. The underwater level was definitely not easy. I can remember one of the turtles having little to no life at the end of it, only to get killed at the start of the next level due to the stupid seaweeds.

I just looked up the manual for the Genesis version and run and jump still used the same button. It used A to use a weapon or spray paint, B to run or jump, and C to use an item from inventory. So they split up the functions of the B button on NES rather than more sensibly splitting up run and jump.
