I never understand how a director can win best director and then not have their film win best picture. The director (Most of the time) is the one who decides how the movie turns out. How can someone be the best director when their film wasn't the best movie? This is in reference to Guillermo del Toro winning best director for The Shape of Water and then it not winning best picture. I know it's happened before, but that just doesn't make sense to me. I always saw it as direction being just a part of the whole, with the rest being acting, screenwriting, music, and editing, which are all considered when choosing Best Picture. Then again, I'm sure there's probably been occasions when a movie has won the bulk of the individual categories but not won Best Picture. yeah, becuase the direction can be fantastic but the writing, editing, or some of the performances might bring it down so it's worse than one of the other films. the whole being less than the sum of it's parts and all that
