Will Esports ever get as many viewers as something like the Super Bowl?

No. I don’t want to watch people play video games.
Could it be on espn at 3 in the morning between monster trucks, poker, pool, and bowling. Sure why the hell not.
As big as the SuperBowl? Never. The Super Bowl is event like no other, commercials, half time show, there’s nothing else on television that’s gives you a reason to watch four hours straight.

Not TV coverage, but League of Legends and Dota tournaments draw fairly big arenas, and Starcraft in South Korea draws full on football stadiums.

I can see esports as an niche/cult "sport" in the states, but never as big as the Super Bowl which is a cultural icon Even if the game is a stinker, people tune in just to watch the commercials or half time show.

Maybe, I think it needs a game that isn't complicated to follow, Dota or Overwatch have too many variables and things to follow for the casual fan. Something more like Rocket League or a Fighting Game might be able to do it. As big as the SuperBowl? Never. The Super Bowl is event like no other, commercials, half time show, there’s nothing else on television that’s gives you a reason to watch four hours straight. The World Cup gives me a reason to watch TV for a month straight

The World Cup gives me a reason to watch TV for a month straight Ain't that the truth. One of my co-workers has booked that entire month off work so he can watch every live game he possibly can.

If you speka on only american term, probably, but in places like Korea i'm sure e-sports can have its own superbowl style event

well if people want competitive video gaming to be taken seriously, they can start by not calling it "E-Sports". it's not a sport. it's like calling a comic book a graphic novel instead (or perhaps, more topically, sports entertainment indtead of wrestling). reeks of pretension to me.
also, watching other people play video games when you could just go play it yourself seems ultra-boring to me.

That second point could stretch to other sports though. Could always get a few friends together and play football, yet people enjoy watching others do it. Pros are better... which is also true with top level gamers. Regular sports aren't going anywhere, but in like, 20-50 years I can see video games becoming a lot bigger and breaking through, becoming more popular than some of the more niche sports.

I sometimes imagine what a WWE-esque sports entertainment-styled version would be like.

In the US I'd say try the Bunny Land Ranch or somewhere similar in Nevada... Oh EsPorts. Nevermind that then.

Maybe not now, but I can definitely see it happening in the not-too-distant future. Especially for a worldwide audience as the Super Bowl is mostly an American thing while eSports have a worldwide appeal. There's a reason why folks like Mark Cuban and Bob Kraft want to get in on it.

I think the big reason it's taking off is the low cost to enter the market and the sheer amount of content it can create.
20 buddies playing Counterstrike in a warehouse for a week can provide hundreds of hours of content. It's cheap to produce.
I don't think it will get "huge", but it doesn't have to because of it's low cost. It's one of those rare things in entertainment that don't need to be huge.

There's a lot of physical endurance training that goes into being a professional gamer and it requires having a lot of physical skills that have more in common with sports than board games. Yeah, it's not the same as say, a professional football or basketball player. But a pro gamer isn't going to be some stereotypical fat slob who drinks Dew and eats Doritos at his desk all day playing games. A degree of athleticism, talent, and skill is required, much like the difference between people throwing around a pigskin in a backyard vs. Tom Brady.

Some of them are fun if presented in a way people can follow what's going on. Sometimes it's presented in a way even people in the know about the game can't follow what's happening. Stuff like FPSes outside of "Search and Destroy" style "if you're killed, you're out 'til next round" are impossible. I LOVE playing Splatoon for example, but I've NEVER seen anyone make that presentable in an e-sports fashion, for example.
Now, stuff like League and DOTA, if you know the material, can be followed. They even have a special HUD for people watching so you can see items and stats as they play, stuff that wouldn't be available to the people playing without opening menus. I'm not a big fan of either game, but that's about the only way you can make that presentable, and obviously it has its audiences.
Fighting games are the ones that benefit most. Those are easier to at least figure out the surface mechanics of. You can explain the basics of Smash Bros. to someone in about 30 seconds. A Street Fighter game might take a little longer, but it's simple enough that you can watch and learn as you go w/o being overwhelmed.
But that's the conundrum with E-Sports to me. The most popular games to the general public are games that are VERY difficult to broadcast. It would take a fighting game hitting CoD/Minecraft heights, and I'm not sure if we'll see that. Or it would take someone figuring out a way to present an FPS match in a way people can follow easily.

No. I don’t want to watch people play video games . Same, I’m befuddled when I hear about the rise of esports and some of the prize money amounts being banded about. I mean I love video games, but watching someone else play video games is just so boring to me That’s just my opinion though obviously

I agree it's a competition, not a sport. If a fat guy can do it at a high level while drinking beer, I don't consider it a sport. I wouldn't consider people playing darts or bowling athletes either. Let's Plays or what the Continue? guys do can be entertaining, but there's more to them than watching people just play a game.
