I thought about this recently and I have wondered on what it should be called or what it's actually called. We all know that when people think of wrestling, they think of professional wrestling, and by that, it usually is the showman-style wrestling that is worked and such. But what about wrestling as in the actual sport? I mean, there are pro athletes out there that have it as a discipline in MMA, but then I have come across wrestling on the Olympic Channel and ESPN. I am sure that not all of the people involved are amateurs, when this version is often referred to as "amateur wrestling." If there isn't a term, what could it be referred to as? I think it's a little much to call it, "the actual sport of wrestling" if I were to want to shorten it.

I figure it would be referred to the discipline, Greco-Roman or Freestyle. I'm not sure actual pro wrestling exists.

I forget exactly when it was, probably 15 or so years ago, but someone did try and set up a Greco-Roman promotion with TV and PPV but it died as it's not a massively exciting discipline to pull in new fans

Olympic Wrestling, or Collegiate Wrestling, I would think.

Weren't two guys scheduled for a 'Grappling match' on that PPV of Bad Ideas featuring a Rey/Angle wrestling match and a boxer doing MMA? Wouldn't that qualify?

There was an 8-team organization called Real Pro Wrestling (RPW) in the early 2000's. It died it a quick death. Problem is in the US, wrestling at the college, high school, and rec levels is competed under folkstyle rules. It's the style most people know in America. Yet in the Olympics, and the world and national tournaments, you have either freestyle or Greco-Roman. The person that knows folkstyle has a hard time following along because the rules are so much different. RPW tried using freestyle rules, with some changes to encourage more scoring. The casual US fan had no idea what was going on.

There really isn't a pro version. It mostly ends with collegiate, with some going forward for amateur competitions like the Olympics and such. And that's about it. There have been a couple of attempts in the recent past to start "real wrestling" promotions, and they tanked hard.
