25 years ago, NBC and what is now Altice USA had this brainfart of an idea for the 1992 summer Olympic Games. en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Olympics_TriplecastThat's right. All the games would be on PPV thus making the longest PPV event of all time. This caused headaches for some cable operators back than who had to preempt channels to carry the games. (I know my cable system in New Jersey did.) Now since technology has changed so much with Internet streaming and that now NBC has more channels, do you think that this idea would work now? NBC now has the Olympic channel and NBCSN.

Well... They just do that already. Allocate events to channels they own.
And they own plenty.

During the Australian coverage of the London Closing Ceremony.. caller and local asshat Eddie McGuarie was completely baffled when “Batman and Robin” emerged from a exploding Reliant Robin.

To be fair there, I could understand why several countries would be confused by that particular moment.

The BBC are the best. During the London games they devoted about 24 digital channels to covering it. I wish they'd get the Paralympics too. Channel 4's coverage is shite. They have adverts during the opening ceremony. Hell of a way to respect disabled athletes by cutting to adverts for GoCompare during their parade.

I doubt we’ll see the Paralympics on the BBC anytime soon as the cost would be hard to justify with already having the Olympics. Then people would complain that there’s too much coverage of sport on the BBC. As the Paralympics is one of the events that must be shown on “Terrestrial TV” it’s sadly always going to be on either Channel 4, Five or (shudder) ITV. I remember blowing my friend’s mind when he claimed that the FA Cup final was only going to be on Sky Sports. He had no idea a lot of the sport on the main channels is because they HAVE to be on there. As for Channel 4’s coverage, we got The Last Leg out of it so I’m forever grateful to them for that.

I like what channel 7 in Australia did with the last Olympics in Rio.
They used three tv channels... plus they showed everything on the internet. They basically set up a live streaming service for the games you could watch through a website or an app.
Most of it was not free though. But it only had a one off $20 to access everything and it was mostly ad free (when you pick an event it would play an ad at the start and that was it, the rest of the event broadcast would be ad free)
It was nice to watch some the more obscure events and events that Australia don’t really take part in so they would not have tv broadcast time dedicated to it.
But it was buggy the first week of the event.
Hopefully they have an improved on in Japan in 2020.. cause the time difference is not that much from Australia.

The only reason I remember this is because Vince referenced it on the Survivor Series 1992 preshow.

I watched SSeries 92 straight of the PPV. My cable system didn't carry the pre show from what I remember. Did Vince say it was a money-loser?
I think the Olympics need to leave NBC.

I haven't seen the preshow in forever and a half, but he was listing things you can watch on PPV: Tennis, college football and the Olympics.

But, they still showed the Opening Ceremony on a tape delay even though New Yorj & Rio de Janeiro are in the same time zone.

I think that’s what pissed so many people off about the 7/7 snub. They had hours to edit together the Opening ceremonies and as one of the biggest broadcasters in the world, would have had a running order of every part of the ceremony days before it even started, yet they still made the decision to remove the tribute. They should have known the connection between the attack and the Olympics and kept it in. I know NBC is an American broadcaster but regardless, keep the tribute. It was only a few minutes long.

But that's also the problem where no matter what city or what network gets it, Olympic coverage is going to suck- especially in the US which usually is good to do well in the Olympics. The US just does well enough in the Olympics, every year, that it's a guarantee going into it the US will probably get multiple gold medals. As such, any network that covers it will just edit the whole show to show just the events the US medals in and go "YAY US!"

If NBC ever lost the Olympics, I would be happy. Tired of their half assed coverage, snubbing of events, and massive American bias. Yes... I am American, but do we really need to spend the entire coverage focusing on some rando from Colorado that gets 32nd overall, while giving slight lip service to the world record breaking dude from Italy, who they damn well will try to say only won because of a judging conspiracy? And really tired of focusing on frikkin Phelps and whatever clever name the women's gymnastic's team is calling itself 95% of the time.
And for the love of god, fire Mary Carillo and her weird idiot abroad human interest stories. "Nice dam China, why didn't you just use beavers?"
Yes, I realize they broadcast all events online, but usually without commentary. And some of the lesser covered events could use someone explaining how things are scored, like Judo.
