Just now. And Tommy came up onstage. Just so wonderfully absurd. Do the right thing, Oscars.

Can you imagine if one of the worst movies of all time led to someone winning a goddamned Oscar? Like, Hollywood themselves couldn't make this shit up and yet here we are, staring madness in the face.

Franco didn't let Tommy get anywhere near the mic.

I love it. The film was excellent, as was James' performance.
But he deprived us of whatever greatness was going to come out of Tommy's mouth.

Can you imagine if one of the worst movies of all time led to someone winning a goddamned Oscar? Wouldn't be the first time. Plan Nine from Outer Space led to Tim Burton's Ed Wood, which got Martin Landau the Best Supporting Actor Oscar for playing Bela Lugosi.

Meanwhile, Lady Bird won Best Comedy. Um, what? Maybe the voters love and miss King of the Hill so much, they thought they were voting for Hank's dog?

Meanwhile, Lady Bird won Best Comedy. Um, what? Lady Bird had a fair amount of humor mixed together with its drama. The Golden Globes aren't too keen on giving nominations to off-the-wall comedies very often (Hangover was an outlier). I'm a bit disappointed Girls Trip wasn't nominated. It gets hella dramatic towards the end, but it still has that balance I imagine the voters would be looking for.

I just don't know. It was a good performance and all, I guess I just have issues with people winning awards for portraying someone so easy to impersonate.
I'll admit, I've not seen most of the performances he was up against. And I also know I sound like I'm saying "nobody deserves an award if it's not an original character". But I feel like this would be similar to giving someone an award for their portrayal of Eric Cartman (outside of Trey Parker, considering that's his character to start with) or their portrayal of The Rock. And yes, he had to get the mannerisms, the attitude, all of that down, but I feel like that's just acting 101; any decent actor/actress knows nailing the voice (and to his credit, there's plenty of nuance in that too, it's not just being a "sound-alike", but I digress) is only part of the battle.
It's not a bad performance at all. I was just never sold performance-wise that he was this deep, nuanced character that Franco just absolutely knocked out of the ballpark, that ONLY Franco or someone close to his talent could pull off (though he did get the look down, for the most part). There's times where you can tell it's CLEARLY not Tommy. I remember seeing the "what is line?" scene in the trailer and hoping that was some teaser and not actually in the film (or not in that form), cause it seemed like some SNL performance of Tommy Wiseau, not someone who had the character down pat. The side-by-sides of the actual scene vs. the crew reenacting the scenes at the end make it stick out too.
But hey, good on Franco, good on Wiseau getting a moment in the sun (even vicariously), I can't deny it'd be must-see TV if he got up on-stage at the Oscars. And the movie is definitely great.

I'm gettin a little tired of The Room. I've laughed at it and owned it forever. Read and enjoyed Disaster Artist and want to see the film version. Glad Franco is getting recognition, and good for Wiseau for being a good sport and for milking as much fame and money out of this thing as he can.
That said, the movie is still utter garbage. It's hilarious in its incompetence, but it's still incompetent.
I dunno, feels like they're kind of giving out a version of a participation ribbon regardless of quality etc because it became a cult thing. I mean there are a thousand shitty movies made each year that don't get acclaim for their shittiness.
I don't know, maybe I'm just Room-ed out. Cheepcheepcheep.
