So, got a ton of Amazon vouchers for Xmas and decided "f*** it" and put them all towards a Switch with Breath of the Wild.
I know all about the praise for the game. The rewards, the 10/10 scores, etc. But Zelda to me is kind of like the Sonic Cycle in reverse. Every game is apparently a masterpiece for the ages, topped only by the next one. For me, the last one I truly enjoyed was Ocarina of Time. Wind Waker was good until the end, Twilight Princess was just okay, and I got bored of Skyward Sword after the third dungeon. So I figured the praise for BotW was just the usual exaggeration.
It only took an hour to realise how wrong I was. This game...is phenomenal. It addresses the main complaints people had (lack of challenge, too linear, same boring fire/water/forrest etc dungeons) and says "fine assholes, just do whatever". If reminds me of the very first Zelda where you can tackle the game in any order and go anywhere and it doesn't hold your hand. Yet it's still Zelda at it's core, so they haven't completely tried to reinvent the wheel...they just made the wheel awesome.
And holy shit, it's a smart game too. I keep trying things just to see if the game will do it, thinking "nah, surely no-HOLY SHIT IT HAPPENED". I love games like that where they thought of everything. Although it does mean little progress since I just keep trying to hunt/cook whatever, seeing how high I can climb or seeing what I can send to the moon with octo balloons.
So yeah...good game. Play it.
