There apparently was a alarm sent to everyone's cellphone in Hawaii that a ballistic missile was incoming and it wasn't a drill. Turns out it was all a false alarm mistake and there are no missiles incoming.
As someone who has family who lives in Hawaii, this is not funny.

It took 45 minutes to send out a retraction. If there was an actual missile threat, that would've been far too late as the missile would've reached land before then.

You know in an action movie when the hero blows up the missile in the sky after it’s been launched and then the news reports say it was just some kind of false alarm and there a huge cover up of what really happened? Just sayin’

Not only is this terrible for the fear and anxiety it put people through thinking they might never see their loved ones again, it also means it's less likely to be taken seriously in the case that it does ever actually need to be used. An absolute farce that this was able to happen.

That's not cool, especially since Hawaii's one of the places i'm thinking of going to on vacation.

I will be in Hawaii on March 15-22 visiting my brother and his family so I really don't like this whole crap.

This seems odd to me. Surely it's not just one button to send such an alert but a more complex system.
I think either the warning was legit and came from on high (A NK missile test which was on an Hawaii course and came closer than expected? Probably not an actual attack, but I have to think if they detected a missile on course for Hawaii the warning would be sent) a possible hack of the system or, it was planned by the government to gage response times and public reaction as a sort of drill so they know in the future what will happen.
This been an accident really doesn't sit right with me.

My friends there in her honeymoon scared the puss out of her. A typo, I hope. 😊 And in case anybody was wondering why the Pacific Ocean got warmer, it's because everybody in Hawaii pissed themselves.

A guy on Reddit, living in Hawaii, upon receiving the notification, posted in the subreddit "casualconversation" about it. I found that so particular.

Right now someone in some government office is getting a monumental telling off.

Outdated cyber-infrastructure + even just one person's mistake or incompetence can cause a glitch that can set something off like this. If anything I find it being an accident to be more troubling than some conspiracy theory that this was intentionally done.

Well, at least they know it works, I guess.
Edit: BTW if you think the system would need to be more complicated than a single button, you might want to consider the idea that missiles are very fast. If the system is even slightly complicated in getting done it might as well not exist. Tornado alerts operate much the same way. They override everything and are activated very easily because they need to be very quick.
As for it being some government test that's just kind of ridiculous since activating the public system for checking a "response time" makes no sense. It's not like you can track how fast people get to a non-designated shelter of any sort. If you had official things you were needing to test, you wouldn't need to activate the public alarm. It's just a case of people wanting the world to be less mundane and have some super secret meaning behind it. It's just a mistake. You also wouldn't need to test it to see if it "works" since we already have had these systems in place for decades for other things like tornadoes and tropical storms (despite my joking comment). We know damn well they work.

From Hawaii. Did not piss myself. But yeah was scary to see notification literally say:
"EXTREME WARNING NOTIFICATION: BALLISTIC MISSLE INBOUND TO HAWAII. THIS IS NOT A DRILL. TAKE SHELTER IMMEDIATELY."
We were like, welp. Guess we're dead. One last/surf/drink/golf/fishing session, how about it?
On the other hand there was also mass panic with people speeding on the roads and ignoring traffic lights. I'm worried the cry wolf phenomenon might happen after this. But for sure missle stuff will be on the mind of all us Hawaii people from now on.
