I was torn between this show and another show across town featuring V▲LH▲LL, Distorted Retrospect, GÖR FLSH and Subterranea. I’d never heard of any of the bands at either show save one at this show. Ultimately I chose this one because I like the club much more. It’s a grimy metal bar so the thought of seeing a show like this there was pretty funny. It was one of the coldest nights of the winter (so far) and there were maybe seven people inside when I got there (ten if you include myself and staff) and it was f***ing freezing.
First up was the one act I’ve even heard of on either bill Dana Jean Phoenix. I saw her open for Dance with the Dead last November and was impressed enough to see her again. I guess her being there was another reason I chose this show because I figured any acts she would be playing with would be of similar ilk and I like her style of music: poppy, 1980’s synth. She performed as well as I remember her performing a few months ago.
The next solo performer Hello Moth really interested me. It’s just a guy and a CASIO sampler. Very minimalistic and vocal driven. A lot of his songs were loops that he sampled over each other so by the end of the songs all the layers were really cool. He played his best song Clouds in Cloudless Skies first but some of the other stuff he played was pretty cool. All I really didn’t like were his scat vocals. I hate scat vocals.
The next band Glass Apple Bonzai started off kinda slow. And I watched a Facebook video from the other show I was thinking of going to before they started and it looked a lot more beat-heavy, which I do like more. So I was worried I went to the wrong show. But they kicked it up a notch midway through their set with a cover of the theme from Ghosts 'n Goblins from the NES and it became a lot of fun and we were all able to dance. The sound was too quite though. If they’d have turned the drums up louder it would have been really cool. The soundman did by accident at one time and it was awesome, then he turned it right down.
I guess the Rain Within was the headliner, even though most everyone left after Glass Apple Bonzai. He wasn’t too bad. He did do a cover of Rihannas Umbrella and that was f***ing awesome, probably the best part of the entire show. But he didn’t play too long and there were maybe five people on the dance floor for him (yours truly included) and I tried my best to dance my pants off but it wasn’t as fun.
As I left the DJ was playing some more beat heavy music but I had to leave. I checked in on the other shows Facebook page and a person was complaining that the sound was terrible at that show so I was glad I chose the show I chose.
