Big Wreck

The opening band Attica Riots were an okay free rock radio band that sounded like every other opener from any other large-ish alternative rock or nostalgia show I’ve been to in the last five years.
I was never a huge fan of Big Wreck in highschool. I had the album ‘In Loving Memory of…” for which this was a twentieth anniversary show and tour for but I don’t have it anymore so I must have sold it. They were somewhat of a big band in Canada. But they had that one album, then another that came out four years later...and then they broke up right when they were poised to cement themselves in the Canadian music industry. The frontman went on to have a marginally successful solo career but I guess that sputtered out a few years ago and the band got back together. Well actually, upon research he took his solo band and adopted the name 'Big Wreck' again then the original guitarist rejoined him a bit later. In Loving Memory of… was popular enough that a lot of people had it but even I remember that aside from the singles it really wasn’t the best album. So that’s how this show went. The singles (That Song, Under the Lighthouse, Blown Wide Open and the Oaf) got a great response and the rest fell on deaf ears. I can’t blame the crowd though. I don’t think it was an album that had enough legs to warrant it being played in its entirety on an anniversary nostalgia tour. I did enjoy a few songs tonight that I didn't even remember from the album when I had it (By the Way and Fall Through the Cracks were both really good) but there were a lot that reminded me of why I probably sold the album in the first place. And That Song is their best song in my opinion (it’s still a song that I really enjoy today) and they played it really early in the set and the show peaked there.
My friend Ted gave me the ticket and it was more fun just hanging out with him. I can’t say I’d ever see Big Wreck again outside of a greatest hits show. But they didn’t have many hits outside of the four off this album. They even had to play a song from the singers solo career to close the show out on a high note. They sounded good and performed well. It's just they don't have a very strong selection of songs. They’re a good band to have opening or as a part of a co-headline package tour.
