Prior to his neck injury, it was Benoit... However Eddie started proving he was a main event calibre performer while Benoit was out. His ladder match with RVD really made me rethink my position. In terms of their big title pushes, yeah Benoit had more prestige to his road to the title as well as the main event and a longer reign...but Eddie's reign was more memorable. Benoit did all of jack shit during his reign.Well, that's what happens when you're on the same show as HHH. Though yes, Eddie was the bigger star in WWE.

I don't understand why most people are replying to the 'who was better' question rather than the 'who was the bigger star?' question.
Benoit was definitely the bigger star. Eddie was just better at pretty much everything.

I love Eddie and he's probably top five of all time for me. But I still think it's Benoit, he was always pushed harder than Eddie up until 2004 in every company they were both in. He had his stint in Japan, was a bigger deal in ECW, was a Horseman and an upper mid-card mainstay in WCW, including a probably not worth mentioning WCW title reign. Feuded with The Rock upon entering the WWF while Eddie was with Chyna. Won the Rumble and main evented what was one of the biggest Wrestlemania's ever. Eddie never really had anything close to the push Benoit received until his Brock feud.
Eddie for my money was better in every area as a wrestler but in terms of who was the bigger star I'd say Benoit.

It’s really weird for me, because when I say this I always get accused of retconning my opinion based on the tragic events, but I genuinely never liked Benoit. He was one of those guys that I knew was an objectively “good wrestler,” but was so devoid of charisma that I could never really get into him. And, again, I know this sounds fishy to say now, but he always kind of creeped me out. Like I just always found him unsettling.
Now, Eddie? One of my all time favorites. And, like most in this thread I think that was reflected by the audience as a whole. Eddie was more over everywhere in the world except Canada.
And just to clarify, I agree that Benoit was generally pushed as the bigger deal, but Eddie was the bigger deal with audiences.

Benoit was easily the bigger star. Their deaths make Eddie more fondly remembered now obvious, but during their lifetime Chris was always the bigger star. Eddie was the better all round guy, but Chris was always pushed on a higher tier. This is correct. Like I said in my post, if you lived through and watched their careers, this is pretty obvious. Eddie might have had the higher peak with his big title run being more successful, but Benoit was always the bigger star and pushed as the bigger star. Benoit went on last at WM20, not Eddie. And I am not saying that as a Benoit fan, I always liked Eddie better and I can’t eveb watch Benoit matches to this day.

Eddie is by far the better all round package
Benoit was the best technical wrestler I have ever seen.

Benoit was a big deal for longer, but I'd argue Eddie peaked higher.. Bout sums up what I was thinking.

Benoit's lack of charisma always held him back so although he was the bigger deal at the beginning, he never quite reached the heights or popularity that Eddie did.

Benoit winning was what they chose to end a Wrestlemania on after beating Triple H at a time when nobody beat Triple H. Eddie had better mic skills, (I wouldn't say Charisma because Benoit had great physical in ring charisma) and is the better all around performer because of it, but Benoit was the bigger star. Of course going forward Eddie will always be remembered as one of the best wrestlers to ever lace up a pair of boots and Benoit will be remembered for his final days... so... there is that.

Benoit was a big deal for longer, but I'd argue Eddie peaked higher, such as defeating Brock, something that, to this day, only a handful of guys have done in the grand scheme of things. If we're talking post-death, obviously Eddie with WWE, and Benoit has much more name value outside of it for- what do you THINK for? Have to disagree with Eddie had a higher peak. Benoit got the rumble win and mania main event. Also Benoit although only had one reign, always seemed to be treated as credible threat to the main event scene (feud with Rock in 2000, triple threat at KOTR 2001 and vs Angle at rumble 03.) He also was an “early draft pick” in the first brand split draft. Eddie really only had that 04 reign and that was shorter than Benoit’s.

I'm honestly surprised Eddie is so far ahead in this poll. Benoit always felt like the bigger star to me. He came in during the WWE's hottest year (2000) and received a big push straight away. Eddie only started becoming a big deal in 2004 really in terms of a main event push.

Imo Eddie was kinda just there until los guerreros

Because Benoit mainly let his wrestling only do the talking, it's hard to remember as many good promos or such as Eddie, even from the WCW run

Eddie easily and it's not even close.
Benoit could do skits as well though. I thought his coffee making skit involving Orlando Jordan was pure gold.

I would be curious how many people voting in this poll were fans when these guys were around.

Benoit was a far bigger star for the first 3-4 years of their WWE careers. Once Eddie got his main event push and won the WWE title though I think he slowly starting overtaking him and by the time of his death in 2005 I'd say he was definitely the bigger name.
