In the Avengers Assemble movie, his death was the final push to getting the Avengers to work together (and even before that he was the lead Shield agent looking into things like Mjolnir), in the show Coulson has always said he didn't want the Avengers to know yet - even when Sif wanted to tell Thor, Coulson said "I want to be the one to tell him myself".
I'd just want to see Thor's reaction - "SON OF COUL! YOU LIVE!"

I’m more interested in Tony Stark’s reaction to seeing Phil come back bearing in mind his face off with Loki just before the battle of New York...

Well, they can know if they are interested. If nothing else, the existence of a unit led by him was part of the document dump byvWidow in The Winter Soldier.

I was always sure that Coulson would make his return in Infinity War to give the Avengers one last motivation before the final battle, but the fall out between the movie and TV divisions is getting so vast I'm not entirely sure.
I'm not exactly wanting Agents of SHIELD and the Defenders to have expanded roles in Infinity War, just show them fighting Thanos' forces on Earth while Cap gives a speech about humanity never giving up or something.
Although now that I think about it, isn't Agents of SHIELD set in space now? I've not seen it since the first season.

Surely Romanov must know. Seems like something Fury would’ve told her. Clint I’m not sure would’ve even bothered to seek that info out - by Age of Ultron he had one foot out the door and was ready to get out of the SHIELD life, by Civil War he was actually retired.

The characters get teleported through a monolith.

I know it sounds lame as shit, but it's actually the best the show has been in a very long time.

Thing is, Coulson hasn't exactly been hiding. He's constantly surrounded by Shield, running around in public and fighting one enemy or another. Hell, just about everyone in Hydra should know he's alive. It wouldn't surprise me if there are literally only six characters who still think he's dead. Even then, Banner barely knew him enough to care.

Sif was in an episode in the first season, being very surprised he was alive. "Thor told you were dead!" or something like that. I'm pretty sure she's told Thor between the scenes.

Probably not. the TV and Film divisions are technically separate companies... I know Whedon was annoyed that they brought Coulson back as he wanted him to stay dead... (but he and his brother were in charge of bringing him back.) Sif was in an episode in the first season, being very surprised he was alive. "Thor told you were dead!" or something like that. I'm pretty sure she's told Thor between the scenes. The end of that episode was Phil telling her not to tell Thor as he wanted to tell him himself, and Sif agreed.

I would love for there to be a scene near the beginning of Infinity War part 2 where Coulson and the rest of the Agents (lets assume they find a way to get back to our time) come through a door at Avengers HQ and asks "so what have I missed?".

There's a bigger chance (that's still slim) that Skye/Daisy/Quake/WhateverHerNameIs appears as the SHIELD rep than Coulson ever returning to the films.

Sadly, because there's such a divorce between the Cinematic Universe now and the Television Universe, I don't think it's ever coming. And it's baffling, because you know Marvel fans were ready to freak out at either Agents Of SHIELD showing up in the movies or even one of the Big 6 showing up on TV. But for some damned reason, DisneyMarvel is intent on not sullying the movies with any presence from the TV shows, and it's baffling.
Then again, these are the people who are convinced that Black Widow isn't going to sell merchandise by being on it, because girls, ew, apparently.

I don't think he is. Now that they've confirmed the multiverse in Doctor Strange, I think the TV shows are an alternate reality from the films. Hence why the movies effect the TV shows but not vice-versa.

The current SHIELD storyline could've easily tied into Infinity War by having a fight between Thanos and Quake that causes the world-devastating event, explaining the lack of SHIELD in IW.

The Avengers disband forever.

The problem with TV characters appearing in the movies is the movies are then more or less beholden to the TV shows. In the TV shows SHIELD is still around, a war is going on between a supernatural clan of ninjas and a small group of super powered vigilantes right under the noses of Tony Stark, Captain America, and Spider-Man, and there are tens of thousands (if not hundreds of thousands) of super-powered Inhumans all around the world.
Marvel already gets a lot of (unfair, IMO) criticism from people who think the movies are too interconnected as it is. Once you have to start following half a dozen TV shows as well just to keep up with the movies it starts to become unfeasible.

I believe this was exactly the reason why they said they wouldn't have much connection. They don't want people to have to watch the shows to understand stuff in the movies.

Feige has said he would like to include TV characters at some point, and it certainly wouldn't be impossible to drop someone like Daredevil into a movie without requiring the audience to have seen his series, but with the feud between Feige and Perlmutter at a fever pitch right now there's no chance of them making the effort to do so.

It would be a neat continuity nod to have scenes in Infinity War where, when some serious stuff is going down on Earth, to have quick reaction shots from Luke, Danny, Jessica, and Frank. To most people who dont watch the tv shows (including myself, admittedly), it would just look like bystanders reacting, but for the people who DO watch it would be a nice Easter egg.
