I grew up a suffering Indians fan and honestly I've been waiting for them to do this for years. Glad they're finally doing it just to get people to shut up about it and let me enjoy my damn baseball team. I've personally made a conscious effort to not buy any merch with Wahoo on it, but giving him a 'retirement tour' is actually pretty smart because people are definitely going to be buying up everything if they know it's his last year.
There was going to be an uproar either way but tapering him down over a year versus a few months before spring training was probably the better way to go.
Honestly wouldn't mind if the whole team aesthetic was rebooted for 2019. The current look has been there since the move to the Jake with a few tweaks, I think it's time, and maybe get some of that good mojo away from the "team that can't quite close out the World Series" look.

Yeah as the token Native American of my group of friends I can say I'm extremely happy to see this addressed. Very hurtful imagery overall and a reminder to more painful days where Native Americans were mocked and treated like crap to say the least. I could go on but I'll save that for the inevitable paper I'll write for a class on the subject. Your turn NFL (though the way that place is run I won't hold my breath).

Good on Cleveland. I can't recall a time when I didn't look at Wahoo and wondered why something like that could still be acceptable. I loved the Major League movies growing up, and even back then my eyebrow would raise a little the more I thought about it.
Same with the Atlanta Braves. The 1970's/80s Braves have some of my favorite retro uniform designs ever. They had some exciting teams. But I think that name and the whole theme has to go. Same with Washington football. Change them all.

It's a racist stereotype. It's in the same category as the "buck toothed Jap" and "watermelon eating pickanniny" images from history. Sure as hell doesn't look like a stereotype to me. So, take away the stereotype, why do you want to support a logo of a grinning dumbass who looks like he farted in an elevator?

I have a solution. Rename Chief Wahoo to Chief Yahoo and turn him into a grinning white cop.No, wait, that's a stupid idea. Joking aside, not only is Chief Wahoo an offensive stereotype, the team name is also a grossly inaccurate one all because of a blunder by Christopher Columbus. Maybe Frasier was onto something when he mistakenly called them the "Cleveland Independents".

I've always heard for the most part, that most Native American groups are ok with the team names (Indians, Braves, Seminoles, etc.) It's the logos like Wahoo and the Tomahawk chop stuff that they don't like due to stereotypes. Obviously, the Redskins are insulting.

I love that the Washington DC basketball team changed their name from the Bullets to the Wizards because of the violent connotation.
Meanwhile, the Redskins have a racial slur as their nickname, and they're fighting to keep it.
By the way, I think the Bullets is a cool name.

Call them the Cleveland Rockers to tie into the R&R HOF. In an ill twist of fate in trying to rectify their wrongs, they choose this as their mascot... {Spoiler}

That reminds me of Jack Handey bit where he imagined high schools of the future having 'Americans' as their team mascot, and they're a warlike stereotype haha.

Obviously, the Redskins are insulting. I feel like if Snyder changed them to the Washington Warriors or something, nobody would complain. Snyder owns the rights to "Washington Warriors" since 2002, for a proposed arena football team that never took off, but more likely in case they lost the Redskins trademark. Some of my other suggestions include the Washington Braves (a callback to their original name), the Washington Natives, and the Washington Senators (Greek/Roman themed). In the case of the Warriors, Braves, and Natives, they're Native American friendly, though it wouldn't please those who seek to abolish Native American imagery entirely. Finally, "Warriors" and "Braves" are also culture-neutral. AFAIK, there's no problem with the logo, it's the name that's getting the attention. But if they do have to change the logo, they can go back to the spear logo they used back in the 1960s. As for the colors, keep the burgundy and gold scheme, and no red, white, and blue scheme, as the Patriots, Bills, Giants, and Texans already have dibs on them.

If they change the name to Warriors, they can keep everything. The logo is actually dignified compared to the obnoxious cartoonery of Wahoo. Plus, he'd get the trademark & make more money off merchandise again. Economics should triumph in the end.

BTW, it's not like college sports have anything offensive against white people who...
ohh...
Don't give me that look, FAN. You just KNOW he's drunk. Besides, Notre Dame is French, but they have an Irish mascot. WHAT'S UP WITH THAT!?!

It's a leprechaun, which isn't real. If you think he's drunk that's on you, and most of the original founders of the university were Irish. If you'd like to learn more about the Irish connection to Notre Dame, as well as thoughts on the nickname and some of Notre Dame's strong and continued connections to Ireland: www.nd.edu/features/whats-in-a-name/

To OP: If an entire race of people by and large finds it offensive it doesn't matter whether you personally find it offensive or not.
Edit: posted before I read the mod post.
