Would you have said that to Bill Belichick after Cleveland or Pete Carrol after New England? Sometimes coaches who sucked a first time do better a second time. Bill got screwed by Art; if he stayed with the team, the Ravens might be a four time Super Bowl champion. I don't see that with Josh. A man with no loyalty isn't a good coach. Considering the cutting of Bernie Kosar was considered a bad move, especially considering he won the Super Bowl as a backup to Dallas Cowboys that same season and the Browns went 5-11. So yeah, while Art did kind of fire him despite telling him he was keeping him, it wasn't as if Bill was a good coach there despite the one season where they made the playoffs and won a playoff game

Another possible reason for McDaniels returning to the Pats would be because of Luck's shoulder isn't getting better.
Matt Nagy chose the Bears over the Colts for the same thing, apparently.

Either the Colts really screwed the pooch or Belichick is nearing the end. I got a bad feeling that Belichick is leaving sooner rather than later.

This is going to hurt him in the long run. If I am a free agent, do I want to sign with a team helmed by a man whose word has been proven to be worthless? If I’m a coaching candidate, do I trust McDaniels as my head coach when he left his support staff in Indy twisting in the wind?
Sure, Robert Kraft got to stick it to the Colts by talking McDaniels out of taking that job. Hope he enjoyed the moment because he bought himself a tainted coach. McDaniels isn’t Belichick. He doesn’t have the accomplishments to overshadow this.

I don’t think the two are comparable. 8 years later he was finally able to a NBA job, but that was largely due to becoming successful again at the job he didn’t leave to coach Orlando. It took him 8 years plus success to wash that stink off. McDaniels won’t have the opportunity to wash that stink off before he needs it off. The comments about free agents and coaching candidates still ring true. It’s the coaches part that pisses me off the most. He agreed to terms, got the team to start hiring his support staff, and got those coaches to quit their f***ing jobs to come to work for him. He upended these guys’ lives. He upended the lives of their families. Now, those guys don’t know what the future holds because there is no guarantee that their new head coach is going to fit with them or even agree to keep them on. It’s a total dick move. I don’t even care that my team is now behind the 8 ball. I’m now convinced that probably is better than to find out the hard way that he is still Hurricane Josh. I’ll leave it to a Broncos fan to tell me if I’m wrong on that count.

This has to one of the least attractive coaching opportunities in the NFL. A star QB who may never be the same (or hell, even play again), a pill-popping mess of an owner, assistant coaches already hired you may not want, no pass rush, and Frank Gore in his 90th season.
Good LUCK with that

What I don't get is why they signed all the assistant coaches to contracts before actually signing McDaniels to one. That sounds really backwards. But then, it's the Colts. That organization's been completely inept since the Polians and Peyton Manning left.

You ain't signed until you are signed. I lay all the blame on the Colts announcing shit before it officially happens.

Good LUCK with that Most teams have those kinds of personnel concerns. Where are the Patriots if Brady gets hurt or his age finally catches up to him? The tram does have the #3 pick, so some need can get addressed in a big way. They also have a fortune in cap space, so other needs can be addressed as well. Regarding Irsay, he has two reputations. The first is the one outsiders look at And that is as the drug-addled goofball. The other reputation is as a decent football mind who rarely interferes with business. It killed him to let Nanning go, but it was the right choice. He also hated letting Edge go, but it was a smart decision by Polian that he ultimately allowed to happen. The one time I can recall him interfering is he stopped Grigson from Pat McAfee simply because he didn’t like him (it says something about Grigson that he wanted to ditch an all-pro player because they did not get along). Bear in mind this is also the same owner who gave Pagano 6 years when other teams would have been quick to ditch him, so you are not one bad season from unemployment if you take the Colts HC position.

That organization's been completely inept since the Polians and Peyton Manning left. It’s simple. They could not actually hire him until this week. He agreed to their terms and told them who he wanted as his coaching staff. Considering the coaching carousel as it was, if they were to give him the staff he wanted they needed to hire them before they could hire him. Had the Patriots lost earlier, they would have signed their HC first.

I understand that and I feel for you as you did get screwed. But I wouldn't say it would guarantee to be a bad move for him. I would merely say that we will hope to make him regret not being with us. My team has a lot of issues of its own like us getting screwed because our owner and now maybe interim GM being complete degenerates.

Like I don't think the Lions signed anyone else before getting Matt Patricia under contract. McDaniels looks real scummy in all this, too. And his agent just terminated his relationship with him because of his 11th hour flip-flop. And unless he's going to be the handpicked successor to Belichick, I doubt he gets another head coaching opportunity anytime soon. But the Colts look real stupid in all this in jumping the gun and announcing him as the head coach before the contract was signed.

Are the Colts cursed? Like The Second most cursed team in this league aside from The Browns?? We're getting there... Nah, I'd say Arizona still has them beat. Pottsville won't let them win until they give it back...

Pottsville won't let them win until they give it back... At least the Colts have a couple of Super Bowls under their belts and won fairly recently in 2007. The Cards are one of the oldest teams in American professional sports (first established in 1898), and not only have they never won a Super Bowl, but haven't won any sort of NFL league championship since 1947.
