Oddly enough, one of my favorite DeviantArt accounts is just a guy who has a collection of different heroes and villains he's made in DC Universe Online.
Guy's got a good eye for recreating characters with the items that's provided to him.

There was an online poll on the site that asked the question; "if you post on DeviantArt, does that make you an artist?" Over 300,000 people voted on that, with 93% voting "yes". I myself being a member... Voted "no". To me, you're a hobbyist. Don't get me wrong; there's awesome artists on the site but in a quantity versus quality environment, the crap ratio is astronomical. Like, in addition to the "the Hedgehog" copy and pasters, there's those who post screenshots of licensed shows, those who don't understand submission policies, and those who do bad Photoshopping to justify a fetish. I'm not trying to slam the site; I just want to say there's a lot of uninspiring effort, so you gotta be careful. If you're a committed artist who is posting on the site, then yes, you still qualify as an artist. Just because you dislike a good deal about DeviantArt doesn't mean that anybody else who uses it automatically invalidates their right to said claim. Second, the good on DA is too good for it to be defined by the repetitive Photoshopping and whatnot. That isn't fair. Hence why I made this thread. Also, I do understand you weren't trying to trash the site. I get your argument, but I really have seen some amazing stuff on it. Just felt like showing it off, 's all. Speaking as someone who hasn't submitted anything there in YEARS and just uses it to follow artists I like (since many of them have scattered social media presences and I don't wanna jack with anything more than Facebook/Twitter/LinkedIn), I'd say the mere act of uploading on dA doesn't. If you're posting original or even reasonably edited stuff (fair use, changing the intention/meaning of the work), then I suppose so. But I'm also a guy that doesn't put much value in being considered an "artist". It's like asking "at what point are you a 'musician'" or "gamer". I always have erred on the side of having a low bar for meeting the criteria to be an "artist", but simultaneously not putting much weight or prestige into the term "artist". |

Also there are legitmate artists on Deviant art... as in people who get paid for their work. Like my buddy Sean Moore who has done paid work for things like Marvel and Ghostbusters for their card packs.    I can't exactly link to his gallery since he does have boobs on them... but if you wanna check him out his deviant name is Seanrm or Artgerm who has done covers for DC Comics.    artgerm.deviantart.com/gallery/that last two they turned into a statue   |

DeviantArt is where I first saw Stjepan Šejić artwork, so it's indefensible to dislike the place as far as I'm concerned....
