OMG the original Goth prototype like LITERALLY I just figured out why girls want to dress that way and it was from a circa 1990's cartoon before goth or 'scene' was a thing, thanks boberts!!! /TheMoreYouKnow [ Just came across this now ] It's been around a lot longer than that my friend. Goth, as a subculture, was born in the late 70's early 80's as an off shoot of Punk Rock. Sprouting from the initial stages of Post-Punk it was initially referred to as "Positive Punk" until the journalists started throwing "Goth" around and eventually it stuck. Or if you want to get more specfic 1978. Siouxsie Sioux (previously a friend in the Sex Pistols inner circle) forms Siouxsie and The Banshees. (RANDOM TRIVA: Sid Vicious (no, not the master and ruler of the world)was their first drummer. Only for their first show. Because he didn't have talent really). They released what many consider the first real gothic rock record in 1978 with "The Scream" Proto-Goth (Goth bands that had a lot of post-punk crossover, and set the stage for later groups to make something more distinct): The Big FourSiouxsie and The Banshees Joy Division Bauhaus The Cure 1st Wave: The Big ThreeSisters Of Mercy Fields Of The Nephilim The Mission Scene is an entirely separate thing altogether that came about in the early 2000's. Imagine if you downed too much punk, goth, emo (real emo) and went to a rave and puked on yourself while tripping balls. Yeah. Scene is like that. They want to be their own subculture made of everything all at once to such a point that they wind up being nothing and mistaken for everything else. Oh, and for some reason they like to style their hair like they stepped into a wind tunnel and had bucket of glue thrown at them.

I committed the sin of being in a newer generation and thinking "we" invented that subculture, the only thing I can say in response to your reply here is "thanks my ninja!" (I'm black so I was tempted to actually type out the actual 'n-word' with the 'a' at the end but restrained myself out of respeck)
