24 but my grandad had died that year so I was able to use the inheritance towards the mortgage.

I live in Vancouver. By the time I'm 137, I might have enough for a down payment on a 1 bedroom apartment.

I just want to say that I've seen this topic for a while now and it makes me feel really depressed.

I bought a house three years ago, so I was 31. Sold it January of this year. I hated every second of home ownership. To me, owning a home has absolutely no value whatsoever. I believe in the saying what you own ends up owning you.
Granted, some of that is because I owned a house in toxic waste shithole Wyoming, and the house quickly became nothing more than an anchor helping to keep me there.
But before that I had no desire to own, and since getting rid of it I'm back to renting and couldn't be happier.
With that being said, I do keep one eye on 3D printed homes, and am curious to see where the technology will be in two or three years.

It was two months before my twenty-fifth birthday
That was in 2005. The cost of living has gone up so much in Ontario now that if I were to start out now I’d probably be able to afford a tent in the woods two hours north of Toronto

I’m 32 and although I have plenty of money I haven’t bought a home. Intellectually I realize this is stupid since in a pinch I could sell the home, but the apartment can be nothing but a money pit. At the same time, if my toilet gets f***ed up right now, someone other than me has to fix that. That seems a tough freedom to give up.....

Still working on it and am about at the speed I thought I’d be when I first made this thread. Anyone else have updates or care to share if you haven’t already done so?

I’m 31 and looking to purchase a townhouse within the next 3-5 years. The intended plan is to have 2-3 floors and rent out the floors I don’t occupy to tenants. The rent they pay will be enough to cover the mortgage, and I can then save money to do it again. Curious where about you’re based around? I’ve looked into setting up a similar arrangement here in Massachusetts. Although I think you’re talking about it on a bigger scale than me since I have to work with MA home prices hence a smaller place. Dependent on what house I am able to get approved for by a mortgage lender I might even have a ranch (one floor set up). I intend to rent out the two other rooms at first to help with the mortgage (though of course that doesn’t help with getting approved for a mortgage loan).

I’m in NJ, but I’m now thinking about doing this in Montreal. Went there for a vacation, and saw tons of Townhouses for sale around the college district. Thinking now of renting during the semester, and Airbnb during the summer.

I'm in the process now! I've had an offer accepted on a house and I'm hoping the mortgage paperwork comes through in the next couple of weeks (looking dicey with it being Christmas though).

I am 33 and don’t own a home. I am also debt free and like that. I am happy in my apartment.
