Thought the more recent seasons were a real nose dive in quality with the exception of a few episodes, but that the most recent season was by and large very good.

Yeah, I guess life happened. Honestly, I thought the show sucked, as a show where every main character is an asshole is not endearing. I remember watching an episode they aired on FOX (heavily censored, of course) where one of the characters finds a Nazi general's uniform and is excited at a financial windfall, and when the curator is aghast at the atrocities that uniform represented, he's sitting there with a shit eating grin and going "So... How much?" This was the first season. I can't imagine how more crude it got. Never really watched the show myself, but it is hard to make a good show where everyone is a terrible person. House would have been unbearable if every character was like House (even if Foreman and Chase to some degree both became, as Cuddy put it, “New House” who worked under “House Classic”). Dexter would have been unwatchable from the start if every character was detestable (fortunately, many characters, especially LaGuerta, were more fleshed out and more likable that their book versions). Does that mean that you can’t have a show of villains? No, but you need some moral compass in the middle of it. My initial impression was that Charlie Day’s character would fill that spot, but it doesn’t sound like that happened.

Most any show is gonna lose a step or two after 12 seasons on the air. Hell, the Simpsons didn't even make it to 10 before the creativity took a dive. It's just not feasible to keep a show going for that long especially with characters as adverse to changing as the Always Sunny gang.

The Eight deadly words of TV or film:
"I don't care what happens to these characters"
A show can be well written, but if you have no emotional investment then you're gonna stop caring.
Even Walter White had nuance, this was 4 assholes and an idiot.

It's quite bizarre actually, because this would typically be a reflection of my attitude also, but something about Sunny bypasses my 'I don't want to watch a show with nobody to root for in it' impulses. I think it's the absolutely ruthless vein of social satire it has in it.

I could never get into it because everyone on there is like the worst possible person.

I couldn't get in to it for the reason given by a few people here - that everyone is deplorable and you dont want to root for them.
But then I actually watched the first, three seasons or so, in a marathon (to get laid) and ended up realising that these characters are awful, but awful in the way we can all be. They have moments that pierce through the awful that reveal why, or that give them just enough humanity to stop them being totally parody, and it just works.
If you can get past them all being dicks to find those little flashes, the show continues to be good as they keep developing some of those threads BUT I do agree it's lost some punch by now. If I'm them, I'd take the records for longest running series and wrap it up.

The characters are over-the-top awful because it's meant to be satire. I think, if people realize this going in, it's easier for them to enjoy the show more.

I could never get into it because everyone on there is like the worst possible person. And any character that drifts into their orbit gets dragged down as well.
