I just wanted MMA Stephanie in the lead up to the mixed tag at WM.

Err........you forgot Brock. Ah yes, the quintessential MMA gimmick, "fights once every 4 months". Probably why I forgot him. He's got the "failed drug test" part down too.

Unironically the best use of an "MMA" gimmick since Shamrock and Severn. And a big part of it working for Shamrock in particular was that mixed martial arts was still looked at more like Bloodsport to outsiders, and he was able to carry that image over. Nowadays, the MMA gimmick just feels like a lazy way to say "THIS IS LEGITIMATE WRESTLING", ignoring the fact that it's still just as scripted as anything else on the show.

I don't mind it. If someone has a fighting background and can go in the ring, it adds to the aura. Even Kama was interesting to me when he came out. I even liked Tank Abott. Dude was wrecking people with one punch! lol
I always thought that's what TNA should have done a long time ago, transition to a wrestling-MMA style, esp. when they had Joe and Angle.

I guess Shinsuke Nakamura has MMA trappings, but less so than before he went full swag. Still has the mouth guard and strikes.

The gimmick jumped the shark when they made CM Punk a Muay Thai expert despite having the coordination of a drunken duckling

I think an MMA influence in someone's wrestling is fine when there's not a whole bunch of dudes on the roster like that already, but when it's done badly, it's f***ing hideous.
Sonya Deville's probably the worst example right now. Has this whole MMA get up and is constantly bigged up on commentary about her MMA background, but then she wrestles like someone with no concept of MMA whatsoever. Also, since it can't not be mentioned, Davey Richards' American Strong Style phase is basically a masterclass of how not to bring MMA in to wrestling.

HHH has done Papa Inoki proud with this faux MMA bullshit. He hasn't done Inoki proud until someone does Inoki's blasphemous-ass entrance (exit, actually) from "Dream Genki" MMA show. He straight-up calls himself "The King of Kings." Would it honestly surprise you if you found out that he's actually pitched it? HHH: Steph, I have an idea for my Wrestlemania entrance this year- Stephanie: No. HHH: But you don't- Stephanie: NO. We have this discussion every year. You're not doing the crucifixion entrance. HHH: FINE! I'm gonna go watch my Harley Race tapes! *storms out*

Eh, watched more than enough workers playing up their amateur backgrounds, football backgrounds, etc., all at the same time. MMA is really no different, just something more modern that hasn't quite fully integrated.

I don't mind MMA gimmicks as long as they play it up as a different fighting style and the matches are competitive. I hate it when MMA guys come in, start saying they're "real" fighters and then dominate the roster.
Honestly, if pro wrestling was "real" and a match was happening under pro wrestling logic, then the MMA guy wouldn't stand a chance even if he was the superior fighter. The pro wrestler would know how to distract the referee, hit a couple of low blows, choke the guy out with his wrist tape, get the pin and go home. Yet whenever Brock has a match his opponent always plays right into Brock's strength and tries to stand toe-to-toe to him. I could see Cena doing something like that, but guys like Orton should've had no problem beating Brock down with a snow shovel and calling it a day.

I actually think that it's not so much about limits on how many people have it as it is about distinction and whether it works.
Shayna makes it work through force of charisma and being a natural. Ronda makes it work because she's Ronda, ditto Brock.
Sonya is the issue. The other three can co-exist, but Sonya just isn't as convincing, she works a very soft looking style, isn't convincingly top, and doesn't have any notoriety from that career to play off to make it more believable, even though it's completely true that she's done MMA.

The gimmick jumped the shark when they made CM Punk a Muay Thai expert despite having the coordination of a drunken duckling Seriously the only MMA in his gimmick was his finisher being a submission hold, which they gave up within a year because WWE, but they harped on him being Muay Thai until like 2010

I’m just glad we’ve reached a point where we can all look back and laugh and how Punk used to be treated as a badass shoot fighter.

For the most part they suck because it's pretenders trying to be badasses. I'm sorry Sonya Deville instead of looking like a killer, looks adorable.

Not gonna lie, now I want them to build up someone as a badass MMA fighter only to have Braun or Lars destroy them in 30 seconds and yell ‘This is wrestling not MMA’. Then you can rebuild former badass as they learn the new discipline.
