All fathers care for their sons. If I can Lance Storm for a minute, I love this movie. I had a TMNT calendar with a countdown for opening day. I have seen this movie hundreds of times, and it took me until about five years ago to realize how every single plot thread in the movie relates to paternal relationships. Literally every single character with the exception of Casey is motivated by their relationship to their father figure, or actually BEING the father figure. Pretty deep subtext for a movie about anthropomorphized reptiles.

Guessing it's probably the case in Mirage, too, but I have never read those at great length. Still, the movie has a lot of set pieces from that, like the stay at the farm, the fight in the burning building, etc, so, likely.

Also, one thing that bothers me: why does Casey keep complaining about their accommodations in the movie when he clearly has his own spot, with rooftop access, in Manhattan?

I figure he's probably one of those guys who is happiest when he's got something to complain about. I also figure he probably wanted to stick around, both out of a sense of duty, and because of April, so he'd rather rough it than bail.

Literally every single character with the exception of Casey is motivated by their relationship to their father figure, or actually BEING the father figure. Pretty deep subtext for a movie about anthropomorphized reptiles. I’ve seen this movie more times than I can count and I didn’t pick up on that either, until someone mentioned it here. Of course, I was seven when it hit theaters so I wasn’t looking for any deep meaning in it, lol. I was just excited to see the Turtles on the big screen. Adding to that, I didn’t pick up on the movie’s other theme of anger and its consequences until, again, this forum. Splinter warns Raphael about his temper, and then said temper almost costs Raphael his life when he’s ambushed by the Foot Clan. And how about when Tatsu loses it and takes his frustration out on that young trainee? (I’ll confess: that scene and Raphael getting beat up were really hard for me to watch as a kid). Finally, let’s look at the final battle against Shredder. Up to this point, Leonardo is the most levelheaded member of the group, but Shredder’s taunts about Splinter possibly being dead prove to be too much even for Leo. So what happens? He charges blindly at Shredder and almost gets himself killed. One more thing: I always found it odd that Michelangelo isn’t mentioned when April is doing her pencil drawings. We know that Donatello is working on the truck with Casey, and Leonardo is watching over Raphael. Even Casey himself gets a mention.
