It's going to be easy to unlock characters, right? Nothing against unlocking, but it feels excessive to just start off with just 12 out of 70 characters. Actually 8. Only Mario, DK, Link, Samus, Fox, Pikachu, Yoshi and Kirby are playable at the beginning.

I'd really prefer having everyone unlocked to start with but can at least live with a small handful. Locking off all of the new, actually interesting characters is just way too much. Though it is kind of cute that there are 64 of them.

Considering how Sakurai seems to like to troll the "fans", I wouldn't be surprised if he made it 64 fights to unlock each successive character.

Personally unlocking characters is one of my favorite parts, but I can see how it wouldn't be some people's cup of tea. I don't look at character lists much so it's a surprise, just like when I played the first one and I had no idea you could unlock characters at all.

I love that if they're just using PNG files to replace trophies, at least they're going for it and digging deep into characters we haven't seen in a long time. Mole Mania's Muddy Mole, Tatanga from the Gameboy Mario Land, Mouser and Wart from Super Mario 2/USA, various DKC ride-on buddies, and then 3rd party stuff like Sigma and Tails.

Unlocking things is my favourite thing about video games. I don't care if I only start with one character and have to unlock the other 1000, DAMNIT IMA DO IT

It really just depends on the game for me. If it's something like, I dunno, Red Dead Redemption - yeah, screw using cheats, I'm going to scratch and claw to slowly get everything and build myself up, that's the fun of it. One of the WWE games or something like Smash Bros., I'd rather just instantly have access to everything and have total freedom to do whatever I want with whoever I want without ever having to touch any side modes I'm not interested in.

I've enjoyed unlocking before...heck in the first 3 Smash games every now and then I would delete character unlocks just to get them again.
With this many, we'll see.

The unlocking of characters reminds me of Tekken 2 and 3. It was always fun to watch those questions marks disappear.

At least we’re not going to have to worry about fulfilling some BS requirement to unlock stages.
Don’t think I ever unlocked Final Destination in Melee
As amazing as the Ridley-K. Rool trailers were, I’d rather everybody new be kept secret save for the Inkling. Part of the fun of unlocking characters in Melee was that you honestly had no idea who it could possibly be next.

I love unlocking characters. part of me wished I didn't know the character but there would be no way. the amazing trailers make up for it.
but unfortunately you probably just gonna have to play story mode to unlock all. kinda like brawl. there is the unique way and the story way.

They said that unlocks would be early and often, at least. At least it's not like the Wii-U one, which I frankly played much less than I had the 3DS one, where I somehow didn't notice I hadn't unlocked one or two people for a while.

My prediction of how to unlock characters is that you just have to beat them once in any mode and they'll be playable from that point on. No extra battle afterwards required.

I doubt it just because in that case a single round of All Star would unlock the entire roster. That said if this happened I wouldn't complain at all.

Well in the Direct, Sakurai said "all currently available fighters" when it came to all-star mode. I believe that means if you play it without unlocking anyone, you're just gonna fight the same 8 characters again and again.

Random thought I had just now:
You think Nintendo might release "updated" Zelda and Ganondorf amiibo for this new game to match their Ultimate looks?
In the same regard, another Ike for the Path of Radiance version?

In the same regard, another Ike for the Path of Radiance version? A leak that's been making the rounds lately would suggest it's not planned but that they're doing female Robin and male Wii Fit Trainer. Shame since I'd buy up LBW Zelda in a heartbeat. Pass on Ganondorf though, be good if they did it for the people that like that look but I've never been a fan.
