We all know that an important part of Spider-Man's origin is him fighting and beating Crusher Hogan (Or Bonesaw McGraw if you're going by the 2002 film), but does this origin really work in this day and age? I understand it in 1965 when kayfabe was highly enforced, but could you really see any promoter letting an inexperienced kid get in the ring with a wrestler, in what was presumably a shoot?

I could see some of the tiny Shindies doing something like that. But no major fed would.
In the Ultimate universe and even the Marvel Adventures universe did Spidey face a wrestler? I don't remember it happening in the Marvel Adventures stuff. But it has been at least 10 years since I read any of that stuff.

I saw a reprint of the origin story of Spider Man, and it didn't mention him being a wrestler, just a performer who would show up on Ed Sullivan-type shows. Was the wrestler thing later retconned into the comic (I know it appeared in the animated series and movie)?

Then after another tv appearance, they wrote him a check that he couldn't cash cuz they wrote it out to Spider-man.

You might be thinking of the "Retold" origin they had which was a quick retelling of the original story that was mostly the same but skipped a few bits like Crusher Hogan.

Also, and I learned this elsewhere, Crusher Hogan actually got a story later on where he has to get Spider-Man's help dealing with guys...and throughout the story he takes credit for being the guy who trained Spider-Man. At the start of the story most think he's just boasting, but by the end Spidey vouches for him.
Haven't read the story and only the synopsis so I don't know if the story is good or not, but just from that it sounds pretty good IMO.

That story about Crusher Hogan is Amazing Spider-Man 271 titled Whatever Happened to Crusher Hogan? written by Tom DeFalco and not the story by Raven, I only know this as I read the story a few weeks ago but then again I have yet to read Spider-Man's Tangled Web 14 which is the issue Raven wrote which for all I know could have the same basic plot

Crusher, at that point, was kind of a washed up bum...but the one proud moment he had in his life was being the very first guy to "meet" Spider-man. A friend of his gets into a jam, and Spidey randomly shows up to help out, and out of pity, Spidey does confirm Crusher's stories...even thought they aren't true. Very nice thing for Spidey to do. The comic ends with the other guys in the gym that Crusher had been telling the stories to all having massive respect for him. As for modern day versions of Spider-man's story...didn't they retcon it so that Crusher was a UFC fighter or something in the Ultimate Universe?

I reread Peter Parker The Spectacular Spider-Man #60 last night and it has a back up feature, a retelling of Spidey's origin written by Roger Stern. Yep, it still included the Crusher Hogan sequence.

Regal used to do just this in his early carnie days.
It's one of those bullshit schemes to make wrestling look "legit". Have a worked match, open challenge to anyone, shoot on them to show how real and tough wrestling is.

Spidey's dealt with wrestlers a lot. The Grizzly was an ex-wrestler who got a power suit from The Tinkerer.

Yep, and I am still very proud that during my time working on the Official Handbooks, I got to flesh out his background and homage real wrestler Dave McKigney a little bit at the same time (Grizzly is now officially Canadian and was born in the fictional town of McKigney, Saskatchewan - McKigney the wrestler was most known for training Terrible Ted, the Wrestling Bear). On a related note, during my time on those books, the Mutant Liberation Front member Sumo also got a real name: Jun Tenta.

Wrestling as a whole has been part of the Marvel fabric since the beginning. The Thing encountered boisterous pro wrestler Golden Angel as early as Fantastic Four #14. In the '70s we got the Grapplers, the four female ex-workers who turned to crime (with one of them eventually becoming Songbird). Then in the '80s, Thing would join the Unlimited Class Wrestling Federation (UCWF) and that stuff was everywhere for a few years. One of the Eternals became a luchador-style wrestler and fought Thor. Then there's that time the Hulk attended a show and there was a certain namesake working a match, pissing off the gray (at the time) goliath somethin' fierce.

Wasn't the UCWF connected with someone named The Power Broker and all of it's members super humanly powered? I believe the Thing fought Thundra during a match in UCWF. I always loved that concept, whatever happened to them, Madison?
