How's John Rooney holding up? He got to call the White Sox in the Series. Then he went to St. Louis and the Score replaced him with Chris Singleton. Who was a decent guy but rather dull. (Then they got Stone Pony on the radio for a year before switching him and DJ. 2 pitchers calling a game doesn't work.) Rooney is a good, but not great announcer. Solid calls, prefect radio announcer but just not very memorable. McLaughlin is good on TV as well, but both are killed by just really bad booth partners (Mike Shannon, Al Hrabosky, and the dogshit worst: Tim McCarver). Rooney would be better as a one-man booth. There are far better announcers, but I've always loved Shannon for nostalgic reasons, I grew up listening to him on KMOX. Tim McCarver is absolute ass, though. There was a period where I really enjoyed Joe Buck on Fox Sports Midwest, but ever since he went national he became way more muted. With the exception of the 2011 World Series, dude sounds bored calling games. My favorite commentator all time is still Jack Buck, with Bob Costas, Vin Scully and Marv Albert as runners-up.

Same on Mike Shannon. Because of age, I only vaguely remember Buck calling games. My mind associates Mike Shannon with radio Cards games. So it is a bit of nostalgia to hear his voice, but at the same time it is hard to not admit that he does kinda suck at this point/sound like he's a few beers in.

Shannon is the Dusty Rhodes of Cards broadcasts. He's not technically good at all, but he always sounds like he's having fun when the team is performing well. Like his "get up baby, get up" call, it's infectious.

Homer pick, but I really like Brian Anderson, Brewers TV play by play guy and 2nd tier national NBA and NCAA Basketball broadcaster. His voice sounds good and he does a great job of using emotion at the proper time. He's also a great guy. Worked out a contract with Fox Sports Wisconsin so that he can still be the Brewers PBP guy and still do his national stuff. Says he never wants to leave Milwaukee and he's had his chances.
On the days he's not doing the Brewers broadcasts, he's replaced by Matt Lapay. He's been the voice of Wisconsin Badgers Football and Basketball for at least 25 years and is also awesome. He's quite a homer obviously, but he's very fair about it.
The Brewers, Badgers, and Packers are lucky to have some great play by play announcers. Hell Ted Davis on Bucks radio is really good too.

Also a homer, but all of the Pirates announcers are great. Bonus points in that I work for the Bucs and get to see them every home game. Really great guys, insanely knowledgeable, and don't hesitate to talk up another player having a good game or season or who makes a great play.

One more: Mel Allen's voice was a treasure, it was so elegant. There's something very comforting listening to his work on old episodes of This Week In Baseball.

I don't really have any favorites, but the two I hate the most are Kirk Herbstreit and Cris Collinsworth. Absolutely terrible.
Also, the guy who does color commentary for the Arizona Rattlers. Either that guy is dumb as f*** or he has a concussion, because he says some of the stupidest s*** during Rattlers games when I have to listen to them.

"You can puuuttt it on the board..." NOOO!!! Hawk Harrelson is a clown (we endlessly did impressions of him in high school when the Sox were actually good) and now downright unbearable as his 'good guys' are no longer any good.
On the flipside, Ian Eagle and Carter Blackburn have great voices, excellent tones and the flexibility to work with anyone (from mush mouth ex-players to non-stop jokers and over-analytical bores).
But coming up hot as a youngster in the game with top notch charisma and insight: Grant Hill!

Kenny Albert is like the Lanny Poffo of sports announcers. Everytime he does the Knicks game you know that must mean Breen has an ESPN assignment tonight

From the motorsports world, Allen Bestwick, Ralph Sheheen, and Mike Joy are the best out there. Can't forget Eli Gold, who's a great football announcer as well. Larry McReynolds is an excellent analyst and missed in the FOX broadcast booth. Through only 2 races, Dale Earnhardt Jr. has added a lot and the future looks bright.
Hate: Rick Allen on NBC is beyond terrible. Darrell Waltrip as well. Ugh.
Gotta throw some historic love out. Chris Economaki had a voice that resonated beyond belief. Can't forget my all time favorite broadcast team, Bob Jenkins, Benny Parsons and Ned Jarrett. Just the right combination of broadcast expertise and, on-track knowledge and charm.
Gotta say, I don't get the love for Ken Squier. Maybe I missed something.

He's been a worthy successor to Murray Walker and I love his combination with Coulthard. for the worst it's David Croft. Overinflates his importance, reliant on stock phrases and resorts to tabloid shock to try and generate excitement (most of it some anti Lewis conspiracy. itv era James Allen was pretty bad too:

My all-time worst would be incomplete without Joe "Nobody Measures Up To Me" Morgan and Jim Palmer, who makes everything about him.

I feel like a lot of the criticism directed at Joe Buck stems from his run from about 2002 through roughly 2010, when he sounded like he was asleep, undersold major moments, played the role of moral arbiter, and basically behaved as though he wanted to be anywhere other than the game he was calling. But since about 2010 or 2011, he's snapped out of it and become very deserving of his role as the lead voice of NFL on FOX and MLB on FOX. He understands the moment, doesn't talk over his analysts, and lets the game tell the story. Go back to his calls of David Freese's walk-off in Game 6 of the 2011 World Series, the fourth quarter of Super Bowl LI, or his call of the entirety of Game 7 of the 2016 World Series, he absolutely nails it.
He might not be the best national broadcaster, but he's up there, and way better than the criticism that's foisted upon him. A large majority of the critics point to his calls early this century, and while those are totally valid, there's no denying that he's gotten much, much better in the past seven or eight years.

A large majority of the critics point to his calls early this century, and while those are totally valid, there's no denying that he's gotten much, much better in the past seven or eight years. His only good baseball call was the one he lifted off his dad. Him calling Freese tying Game 6 was classic Joe Buck. Him completely not into it, but as you alluded to, he's louder. Game 6 is easily one of the top 5 baseball games of all time. And he calls it just how he is. And I appreciate the effort to sound more enthused. But he's not. He's just not that guy. The real problem is that Buck simply outkicked his coverage. If he weren't THE guy for Fox, and not getting these top notch assignments all the time, he wouldn't stand out as much. If he were on Fox's C team, he'd get less criticism. But yeah, I don't think he stands out in anything I look for in an announcer. His voice ain't great, he isn't overly good at calling the action, he's never invested in the games, he has 0 classic calls, he doesn't regale me with funny anecdotes or interesting history about Player X. To me, he is below-average to average in any measurement of an announcer. He thinks he's funny, but I would describe his dry humor as that of a seasoned mortician.

In a way, a lot of the hate for Joe stems from people who have shut him off years ago and aren't aware he's changed a little. Kinda like hatred for WWE. The people may not have watched it in years, but they still shit on it.
