The book and the film are completely different beasts, but that's both a good and a bad thing.
I remember borrowing the book from a friend's dad years ago and never giving it back. His son was an idiot anyway.
The film is just strange from start to finish. That Gingerman character just makes me laugh before he dies "Come on! You want some, uh?" "GINGERRRRRRRRMMMMMMMAAAAAANNNNNNNN!!!!!!!"

Bad acting, retarded plot, and unlike most campy, cheesy movies of this ilk, the movie seems to be made with an unrelenting (and inappropriate) sense of gravitas, like the the producers thought they were reimagining Aliens, ignorant of the camp value they were shoehorning in by the metric ton. Camp that can't revel in being camp is painful. Jed Shaffer ~Plus, the hot chick with the kinky hair who gets nekkid? Yeah, totally not worth it. But not every movie has to be something great. Who am I to scoff at free (hey, I watched it On Demand a few months ago) nudity and explosions? It was still fun for me And it WAS worth it, but, I wanted more. And Denise Richards Actually, yes, a movie must be great. Otherwise, the movie would, by definition, suck. And I'm not asking it to be some high-minded piece of movie literature, like "Wuthering Heights" or "American Beauty". But when a movie looks like camp, it damn well better act like it (see: Jason X, Toxic Avenger). Movies that reek of camp but refuse to admit it or play into it aren't cool, even in an ironic sense; they're just painful. At least, not to me. And the chick I was referring to? GORGEOUS face ... but the body? Oy. Fried eggs on a nail. Jed Shaffer ~And thus, why I don't understand Snitsky-worship.

The movie is a great satirical piece of work. I really enjoy the movie. I have been meaning to read the book I have always heard good things.

it didn't have to be a masterpeice, and i didn't even know they made a a book out of it. but it is so over the top, that its what makes it Awesome. You can't be serious... The book predates the movie by decades.

It's a shame that the movie went over so many heads. The point the movie tries to make is that war is a joke. So in revels in the camp, absurdity, and violence of it all. I love how the main character ends in charge of a whole fleet because every commanding officer above him dies.
Brilliant movie, went over so many heads.
