Why do Sitcoms like Malcom in The Middle and Everyone Hates Chris look so much different then shows like Home Improvment and stuff? I mean with something like Home Improvement, it looks really obvious that its a set. Stuff like Malcom in the Middle looks more like a movie set, looks more real...
I read Malcom has a single camera set up, maybe thats why?

Maybe because sitcoms have evolved from the days of Home Improvement and now the sets look like real homes?

Because Malcolm in the Middle is in a real house. Home Improvement and other sitcoms produced in front of a live studio audience and you'd need something bigger than a real house to fit them in.

Maybe because Malcom in the Middle doesn't suck?

Are you talking about aestetics, or the actual picture quality? Because I believe those two shows use a different film than regular sitcoms.

Single camera, multi camera. The difference is bigger than you'd think.

Two sitcoms that still look behind in the times are How I Met Your Mother and The Class. I love both of 'em, but its painfully obvious that they are using sets when they are out walking the streets. Like Seinfeld most of the time, it looks fake enough to take away from the plot.
