The original categories for best picture were "Outstanding Picture" and "Best Unique and Artistic Picture"

In other words, a category for the big blockbusters that everyone says should get awards but never do.

Haha. What a ratings grab category that is. And I'm sure they will keep all the overly long "comedy" and 8,000,000 musical numbers while removing more of the actual awards (You know, the thing in the title of your little spectacle) from the show, by "aired later in the broadcast" they probably mean like a little ticker scroll across the bottom like a Sports program. Hahaha.

Sounds like the Disney Award.
Tazz once made a title for himself too.

Yeah this is definitely a way fr them to shut up everyone (including myself) that complain about blockbusters and popular movies in general not getting enough credit.

Rewarding blockbusters? They already did this in 1998 when they gave the Oscar to Titanic over L.A Confidential.
Actually, I don’t have an issue with this Oscar. Other major Awards ceremonies do similar things.

Man, they REALLY did not want to have to nominate Black Panther for their precious Best Picture.

The irony is that the original co-winners of Best Picture and Best Artistic Picture were Wings and Sunrise. But since the artsy category was dropped soon after the official Best Picture winner from 1927-28 was Wings and not the obviously more celebrated Sunrise. Now instead of a 2nd category for the art house flick they're going to do a best picture for popular films. Does that mean the actual Best Picture category will be purely art house Fox Searchlight style flicks?

People know that 'popular' doesn't automatically or inherently equal 'quality', right?
Because I sure as shit can't wait, then, to see Transformers: Bumblebee get some Oscars recognition.

I'd say you're already looking at Black Panther, Infinity War and Mission: Impossible, with an outside shot at Deadpool 2 and one other non-Bumblebee movie. The shame is that Paddington 2 didn't make enough at the domestic box office to really be called "popular" and it isn't animated, so the best reviewed film OF ALL TIME will receive zero Oscar noms.

Ok, I loved Paddington 2. But being the best aggregated reviewed movie of all time doesn't really mean much in the overall quality of the reviews. It was a solid pleasant movie, but not extraordinary or groundbreaking.

I don't know, the whole point of the Oscars trying to celebrate blockbusters that make millions of dollars is lost on me, as there already is an award show for that: the MTV Movie Awards.

Yeah, aggregate scoring metrics aren't really an indicator of HOW good a movie is so much as if there's consensus that it is a good or bad movie.

Are they just going to give an award to the movie that made most at the box office? That's the only way I can see as to how to rank the movies... Unless they come up with a way to track the actual number of tickets sold...
If so, then I would like to point out that both Transformers: Age of Extinction and Mission Impossible 2 would be Oscar winners.

Cut the technical awards and have it go to two hours and you'll have your ratings back up.

You mean the MTV Movie AND TV Awards. The MTV Awards shows have been straight garbage for a long time now. Especially the Video awards, since, you know...they don't show videos anymore. Might as well call it the Catfish and Teen Mom awards.
