It might sound like a silly question with the Yankees doing their thing right now, (I hate them)but all other teams seem destined to be formidable bottom feeders for the immediate future. I mean I think its reasonable to say that the METS are quite comfortably the second best team in the city. let's check it out.
Mets- Perpetually Injury plagued and can never really build on success. Spend small market money in a big market down and usually don't draft and scout well. A pennant and wild card quickly evaporated with two dismal losing seasons. Don't know how they get better unless we're counting on a Braves fluke and the definitive closing of the Nationals window. Philly may work out the kinks too.
Rangers- Rebuilding and stinking by design, but are already 0-3. Will be a long while before there back as playoff staples. I would be more content with them but they too never draft well.
Islanders- Lost Tavares and are back to square 1
Giants- Done already. Either get their asses kicked or find ways to lose on most weeks. Eli isn't the same and they aren't very talented outside of OBJ and Barkley
Jets- Darnold looks ok but won't be there for a little while longer. Still aren't very good in the here and now.
Knicks- Notorious for their dysfunction. New Coach, and KP out for a long while. They are waiting for the summer.
Nets-Even if they were good, nobody would pay attention. Will be at the bottom of the standings with the Knicks as per usual.
Like in most other eras, there were multiple teams doing well in playoff pictures even if they didn't win titles. Now its the Yankees and a cast of losers.

It's the worst it's been in a min
In terms of the major sports teams we got the Yankees to lean on but that's pretty much it.
Knicks got a group of cast off's tho they usually do well in making those guys better (except Mudiay), Jets are still rebuilding, Nets have talent but still expect them to lose, Giants have talent and are losing, and the Mets are just cheap
Yankees are the one clear team that's very good but everyone else has holes. Giants should have been the 2nd best team but they are f***ing up

16-1 at the Yankees’ home field.
It’s over, Johnny.

The city has enough titles that I'd be perfectly ok with them getting a "Cleveland Style" run of decades of losing.

At less you have the Yankee's in the playoffs. Some places like Detroit right now are suffering big time, Been few years since any of there teams where close to a championship. The tigers was the last to at less see the championship game. The Red Wings been a while, I feel for the Lions that never gotten there. Pistons been a very long time.

This is more college related but Louisville right now is beyond dire. The basketball program is in well documented shambles over the Katina Powell thing and is also facing a potential repeat offender situation with the FBI investigation (as in possible death penalty). And good grief the football team clearly is terrible post Lamar Jackson and it is obvious that Bobby Petrino is mentally done at this point and could care less after Tom Jurich was fired as AD. I guess Chris Mack has had a great recruiting class for 2019 but we'll see if any of these guys decommit if this FBI court case leads to really awful NCAA penalties.

Knicks and Nets I think could be on the rise. I don't expect either to make the playoffs this year, but both teams are rebuilding the right way so long as a meddlesome owner or two doesn't tank it. The Rangers, I think, could also surprise people. They still have some solid players even if they aren't what they used to be.
I also expect the Devils to continue developing and make it to the playoffs again. True, they're in New Jersey and not NYC, but it's the same metro area and the Giants and Jets play in NJ, too.

Arguably THE Sports Dynasty. Now let's look at everyone else. -2 for the Knicks. Charter NBA team everyone! But to be fair, they had to deal with the Celtics, Bulls. Heat, Pacers, Bad Shots and dumb ass mistakes. -2 for the Mets. Yes, there was the '69 Miracle Mets. But....bad management has repeatedly screwed them and Drugs basically ended that '86 Team before they really got good. -4 for the Rangers. They were one of The Cursed Sport Teams. Hell, they one who broke theirs before the Cubs and Sox! -Jets. 1 Super Bowl. Again, Bad Management. Plus the helped unleash Tom Brady on this world. -Islanders. 4 Cups in a Row, The Dynasty before the rise of the Oliers. But since then? Squat. -The Football Giants. 8 total titles with 15 World Title game appearances. There's been lulls but they been more consistent. That's only 21 titles and alot of heartbreak for all the other teams.

As a diehard Rangers fan, I really hope they blow the team up. Very good chance they could be bottom three team this year.
You could possibly get first rounders for Zuccarello and Hayes for their expiring contracts. If Hank agrees to waive his NTM (I don't think he would want to be a consistent bottom dweller for the rest of his career) you could still get a pretty good value for him, although all the contenders seem to be set in goal and don't know who would want his contract, and you'd have to take bad money back. I'd also look at trading Kreider who will be a UFA at the end of next year and he has a good value contract now. Zibanejad's NTM kicks in this upcoming summer so they could trade him ala Stephan as well. Shattenkirk will be a health scratch against the Sharks tomorrow night so I don't doubt they'd entertain trade talks on him.
Also have the expendable guys that are good but aren't elite in Spooner, Vesey, Namestnikov that could be trade pieces. Goes without saying but they really need to draft/trade for better D but I could go on quite the rant about the D alone. I liked the McQuaid trade but I think he's going to be traded at the deadline.
I really hope they get a top three pick. Jack Hughes, Kaapo Kakko, and Vasily Podkolzin all look like they're gonna be studs and elite talents. If they could get one of those picks on their own, I'd also sell the farm to try to get another one of them too. They don't have any elite talent on their own so it won't hurt to trade anyone at this point.

To be fair, most of those titles were won before a lot of us were even born, or were too young to really appreciate. Like out of the sports titles won, I only really remember the Yankees' world series run and 2009, two of the Giants' Super Bowl wins, the Rangers in '94, and if you count the Devils, their 3 Cup wins. New York's won a lot of sports titles, but it's HEAVILY lopsided by the accomplishments of two teams: the Yankees and the pre-Super Bowl era Giants. It's also got at least two teams in every sport (9 total including the Devils), so there's just more opportunity for the city to win a title. Compare that to a city like Cleveland that has only 3 teams or San Diego where they only have the Padres anymore.

When the Jets are one of the better things in New York sports, things aren't going well. And the Knicks too
Both Jets and Knicks right now are in territories of playing hard and that's all we can ask for as compared to the Giants who had a good amount of talent and f***ed it up on site
Yankees right now is the one guaranteed team to do something but even then baseball is f***ing fickle

In the last 20 years when you include finals, superbowl appearances etc... in general we've had the 2 the Giants won, Mets made the World series twice, Yankees have been to the WS 5 times and won 4 (4 straight times during their 3peat), Knicks went the Finals in 99, and Devil and Rangers been to the Cup in the last 8 years

The Yankees are fine and have a good young core, they will be around for a while and are on the upswing, they will get better. I agree, the Jets and Knicks are doing the best you can expect and should get better as time goes by. For once they both feel like they have a direction and aren't spinning the wheels. The Giants are a true dumpster fire and it will be a long time before they are good again.

Football can have very quick turnaround. It just requires an owner to recognize the reality of the situation. John Mara, right now, is not that guy.
I wouldn't call the Knicks a good or even decent team right now, but they're young and scrappy. They're building something and Fizdale's the right coach to guide them along. I also think the Knicks' Front Office acknowledging that winning isn't their primary goal this year has given a lot of Knicks fans a sense of optimism about the future. And proves wrong the idea that you can't do a rebuild in New York.

I think that got dispelled a few years ago with Cashman and the Yankees rebuild. People were almost begging for it telling them it's okay we understand, we just want a brighter future and Yankees went from old and ailing to young and good real fast
Knicks fans and Brooklyn fans too see the trees in the forest. If the rebuild goes right it's another year or two of BS before things are looking legit. Knicks right now are looking good with Fizdale being a coach who is likeable and while Knicks aren't winning, people see the process. Add on KP coming back stronger next year and a potential key FA and they are looking good
Jets seem to be moving in right direction but it's still a ways away but their is optimism
