Do you just watch sports for the love of the game or do you like them because you can gamble on them? Would you enjoy them anyway, but gambling enhances the experience?
I never gamble, but from another forum I’ve been on and knowing some people in real life it seems like they only bother with a game if they can gamble on it. I’ve even heard people say that if you’re just watching a game and not making money on it then you’re wasting your time.
As I said I don’t gamble so my position is pretty obvious. But what do you think?

Growing up, my pops was a small time bookmaker and he always let me fill out betting slips from the time that I was like 3. It's like my earliest memory. He took bets and also bet himself a lot. I don't bet often, maybe once or twice a year. I just love watching sports, but betting does up the stakes. It's hard to not be more interested in something you have money on.
Just by their nature, sports and gambling go hand-in-hand. But I feel like staying away from sports gambling mostly because I know the oddsmakers are really good at what they do and a lot of time the more analytical you get about something, the less really into it you are as a fan. Like when I do hardcore fantasy baseball and really do my homework, I end up watching wayyyy more baseball but enjoying it less. Betting on sports becomes work if you want to do it in a way that isn't impactful to your bottom line. It also kinda takes away the purity of it. I can watch a random game and get into it and if the team I want to win ends up losing, it's still all good. But when you bet on a random game and lose, it kinda leaves a sour taste in your mouth.
So yeah, gamble, but do it in moderation.

Eh, small-time betting. Ever since I could remember, my dad would drop $5 at work on NFL pick 'em, 13-run pool in baseball, and $2 NCAA tournament draws.
To this day, my mom fills out the NFL schedule in a notebook and the three of us (mom, my brother & me) pick winners.
When I first started working for my current job, there was this little backroom parlor behind the pool hall that took bets on all sports. I never did it myself, but gave personal insight to others on who I would pick.

I used to do daily fantasy MMA before the company I went with got bought out by DraftKings. I stopped that for the most part afterwards.
And other than that, I did sports betting once, when I tried some fancy crap bets when Justify was going for the Triple Crown this year. Lost almost thirty dollars because Gronkowski finished second. Had he finished fourth I'd at least have gotten my money back.

I use to gamble on games but I didn't enjoy the games as much so I stopped.

Sometimes, like if there's a game coming that I have a feel is going to end one way, so I drop a fiver on it. Also do an every saturday 13-fold bet on Premier League/Championship to make some extra interest in the matches that aren't on TV.
By the way, with the way the thread is titled I thought this would be about matchfixing.

Honestly, it is both for me
I actively bet which is fun for me because who the hell doesn't like to win money. However, I can go a week or so stretch without betting and it won't ruin my experience in games because I always have loved to watch sports. I can understand why people don't bet on games but for me it's an added incentive to be invested in games I probably normally wouldn't be like for example if the Kings and Orlando played in the NBA and I had a bet on them

I used to buy squares for MNF games until Brett Favre screwed me over against the Bears. I had a 7 and a 4, which are usually great numbers to pull on squares. Score was 14-all with less than a minute to the half. Packers ran back the kickoff to where they were well within FG range, so I'm rubbing my hands like Birdman, expecting them to run a play, then bring out the kicker to get me my 3 points so I can collect my halftime winnings.
Favre proceeds to TAKE A FRICKIN' KNEE and they all jog to the locker room as the clock ran down to zero.
I crumpled my sheet and threw it in the trash, yelling "Brett, you asshole!"
My co-workers laughed at me because I'm the only Packer fan amongst all these Bears fans.
Haven't played them since.

He had the score all set up and they take a safety to get better kicking position. I started since it came up in NJ because idk why exactly but its always been something I've followed in terms of NFL spreads. Been doing well so far because the Sportsapps promotions have been kind to me.

It's getting more annoying in football now. So many clubs are sponsored by betting companies, and their neverending commercials are tiresome. It's come to the point now where they are taking bets on the number of corners, throw ins etc....which just makes it more vulnerable for corruption and fixing.

My dad was in one of those "34" clubs, where you picked a team, and you won money if they scored 34 points. So the year is 1999. Dad gets the Denver Broncos. He's like, "f*** yeah!" Super Bowl champs, Elway, Davis, etc. You know, a good team to have.
They don't score 34 points in a game all year, or the playoffs. They score and win with 34 points in the Super Bowl over the Falcons.
Guess what? The money was only for the regular season. My dad never did it again. Haha.

Gambling and sports is my pb & j
Love it, do it way more than I should.
I got in bad during my college years betting on college football. Was almost $4,000 in the hole, ya, my parents bailed me out. After that I didn’t make a wager for 10 years.
But Ive been back in the saddle for awhile now. No one is ever truly “up” with this hobby, but I do alright. I would say my yearly losses are in the $2k-$3k range each year. Some might think that sounds crazy, but if you think of it as thats just my losses, not my winnings, its really really good.
For anyone that wants to get into gambling, I have a few core tenants I abide by.
1. Parleys are for suckers 2. College basketball is where the money is. 3. Only tease if its your idea. Never let a book suggest it. 4. Always take a home dog in a divisional NFL game. If they don’t win outright, they’ll at least prevent the other team from covering.
And a side note, prop bets are fun, like sprinkles on your ice cream. You wouldn’t eat a bowl of sprinkles right? So keep prop bets to a $20 or $25 bet max.

I live in Las Vegas and bet on sports at least 4 days a week. I love football and can enjoy it without betting, but betting is a good way to get entertainment out of sports like baseball, hockey,WNBA basketball,etc.. that I normally don't enjoy.
