The one in the mall by me closed down a few years ago. Honestly, the whole mall is damn near empty.

Another victim of vulture capitalism. Amazon and the internet make great cover, but mismanagement, unnecessary debt from leveraged buyouts and outright asset stripping are as much to blame for the hollowing out of the high street... And the people responsible walk away Scott free.

Ever since their stupid-ass, "Let's have our departments actively compete against each other, therefore meaning our stores have no actual reason to carry their own products," policies it was an inevitability.

Sears closing has been a long time coming, but the bankruptcy (and knowing already they owe so much that they will not exit it alive) is a major loss in American retail history. Go back 25....heck, 20 years and state this anywhere and you'd be laughed at. The one in the mall by me closed down a few years ago. Honestly, the whole mall is damn near empty. Mine still has a Macy's, but in its heyday there were 4 anchors & rarely was a store empty. Now it's at 1 anchor, hasn't been above or at 50% capacity in a few years, and they tore one of the anchors down to redo the parking lot when a Wal-Mart bought the land at the back of the parcel for a Superstore. But nevertheless, it persists...

I was laughed it about 6 months ago by a Sears employee when I said this was inevitable. I used to work for a company that handled their benefits. I'm actually surprised they held out this long, to be honest.

This is what, the third time they've filed for Chapter 11? Fourth?
Sears is like a cockroach. Somehow they keep surviving when they should've died a long time ago. Though this time, they're closing the freestanding store near me. That store's been there since I can remember so it's weird going to see it empty. It's also the first place where I played Street Fighter II on the SNES and sparked my love of fighting games.

My wife and I went to the mall this past weekend. Sears was selling everything and Younkers was gone. Several stores were closed and nothing was mentioned replacing them. Malls are a sad sight these days.

Them selling off the money making brands a year or two ago kinda spelled this. They are in such a hole, there is no escape now. Sad. I used to love school shopping at Sears as a kid.

Good riddance! Hired and trained me for one department then threw me in another so I was unable to answer lots of customers questions.
Yup still bitter twenty years later.

Lol, they did the same thing to me. They would often make me work the hardware section even though I told them I knew nothing about tools and shit.

I once worked for Sears. Got laid off after a month without warning after constantly getting my hours cut. Good friggin' riddance.

And the people responsible walk away Scott free. Honestly, there are few brands that would have been more tempting to vulture capitalists than Sears. There are (and were) plenty of worthwhile brands that you can peel off and either sell to another company (they sold the Craftsman brand to Black and Decker last year) or spin it off to a stand alone company that you support. Sears still has the brands of Kenmore (appliances), Everlast (sports clothing and equipment), DieHard (batteries), Essential Home (home furnishings), and several clothing brands like Covington, Canyon River Blues, and Joe Boxer.

I read a comment about this a d i really agree with it. Sears really was Amazon before amazon. If they had adapted more they could have been where Amazon is now

I am actually sad to see and hear this. When I was a kid my mom would always have the Sears catalog magazine coming to the house and I would immediately go to the toy section of the magazine. I really miss those catalogs. Hearing and seeing this makes me sad that technology has evolved in such a rapid pace that it's literally ruining the actual shopping experience. Now people can just sit at home, order any and everything online, and not even do they have to enter into a store and actually communicate with a living breathing person.
