Another victim of vulture capitalism. Amazon and the internet make great cover, but mismanagement, unnecessary debt from leveraged buyouts and outright asset stripping are as much to blame for the hollowing out of the high street... And the people responsible walk away Scott free. Bain Capital's leaders should have gone to jail for the daylight robbery they pulled on Toys R Us

My most memorable Sears moment: I didn't have a stomach bug, but, I had horrible pain, and didn't want to be alone. (I was a teen, and didn't know if my appendix was going to burst, so I went with my mom, to get my niece, a dress). Mom is checking out, and by the door. I can't move, and it hurts to even cry, at this point. The cashier was telling me that he was going to call his manager (I think, if they needed medical assistance, even though mom was there). The manager got there, and I just started to get sick. Everywhere. Now, the joke whenever I don't feel good, is "wanna go to Sears?"

They exist to profit off of intentionally destroying other people's lives though bookkeeping shenanigans.

My mother worked for Sears for about ten years before she died. When she passed they sent us a condolence basket of tasty cold cut wraps. I like to believe that those wraps in some way contributed to their financial downfall. I'm not sure why that comforts me.
About a year or two ago I was driving by the old Mall that that Sears was in and I noticed that the bulk of that Sears was closed and replaced with something called "Primark". I'm still not sure what Primark actually is other then cheap.

At Golf Mill Mall in the chicago suburbs the Sears is also the tunnel between Target/Kohls and the rest of the mall. I have no idea what they are going to do with that if no one rents the space.

My wife is big into the KMart points. But now if we cash them in online, the items will have to be shipped instead of picked up at a store. Ours just "made the list".
The points are a really good benefit. We bought 2 computer desks for like 70% off with them.

Sears and Roebuck changed America. Flat out. And for the better.
Don’t believe me? Consider this - in the era of Jim Crow South, if you were a black sharecropper, you had one option - buying directly from the company store for whatever price was set or the idea that you would work it off. Sears and Roebuck catalogs changed this, giving a chance for people to go outside a corrupted system and get what they needed. It got so bad in the South, blacks were banned from buying POSTAGE STAMPS or sending money orders in some areas.
Sears may have fallen from that perch, but it shows that commerce can make America better and you can make money at the same time.
Something to keep in mind.

I have so much nostalgia walking through the store when I was young to get to the other stores in the mall when it was super hot or raining.

Amazing the history you find when you dig.

Sears, Kmart could be liquidated with no bid to save 2 retail iconsThe clock appears to be ticking for one of America's venerable retail companies. Sears, the 125-year-old iconic department store known for its popular Christmas shopping catalog and its equally iconic Kmart chain, could be down to the final hours, CNBC reported Thursday afternoon. With more than 68,000 workers between the two brands, Sears Holdings' last chance at survival comes down to a possible $4.6 billion proposal by Chairman Eddie Lampert. Lampert has a deadline of 4 p.m. Dec. 28 to submit a bid. As of Thursday afternoon, Lampert had not yet submitted a bid and it also was unclear whether he had lined up funding to make a bid, CNBC reported. Lampert, who seeks to rescue the company from bankruptcy through his ESL Investments hedge fund, is said to be the only party considering a bid for one of America's most iconic mall anchors. If Lampert does not make a bid, the two brands would face liquidation — a process that would take weeks based on bankruptcy court guidelines. Man, that is a lot of jobs.
K-Mart seems to mostly still exist in rural areas too.

It's likely that Sears could be saved, although at this rate they might just be delaying the inevitable, but Kmart... not so much.

From what I understand K-Mart is very popular on Guam.

And retail is already hurting enough as it is with regards to jobs. Nobody wants to subject themselves to work that pays little and doesn't really allow you to grow much past that career-wise.
I know it from experience, being a retail worker myself. I'm currently looking elsewhere, mainly due to the fact that I have a college degree and can do better than this.

Well after surviving all those cuts the Amarillo Sears is among those getting closed in March. Pretty sure it’s been open since before I was born. With Toys r Us and now Sears going down the local mall might be a ghost town before long.

We had a giant ass Sears at the local mall. It's been shut down for a few months but it was such a big store I have no idea what would be put in to replace it.
