So sad... and it seems to happen at least once every offseason too. RIP, and hopefully the other guys get healthy.

From the New York Post:
The Sox love their reclamation projects.
And MLB.com had this yesterday:
Jones is alright when healthy. Somebody has a voodoo doll with his name on it, though. Lotta freak injuries the past few years. As for Shields, notorious slow starter who gets the hang of pitching around June. I didn't dislike him, he did alright. But he's not worth $16M for another year of this.

Wasn't there two players who died in car crashes on the same day in two different accidents a while back?

Here's a handful of off-season predictions for your 2018 World Series Champion Boston Red Sox.
- Relief pitcher Craig Kimbrel re-signs for three years, $54 million. Boston has already extended a $17.9 million qualifying offer for Kimbrel, so I could see them rounding that up to an even $18 million per season on the open market. Kimbrel had some visible struggles in the postseason, but he's still one of the most dynamic closers in the game. He turns 31 in May, though, so I could see Boston losing out on his services if another team comes calling with a four- or five-year deal.
- Starting pitcher Nathan Eovaldi and first baseman Steve Pearce sign elsewhere. Both dramatically increased their stock with their playoff performances, and while there's no doubt Boston would love to have both return, I think each player will find more lucrative offers from other organizations. There's bound to be a franchise that views Eovaldi as a third (or borderline second) starter, while Pearce could land an everyday gig in another city. Both would need to accept significant hometown discounts to stick around.
- Boston signs at least one of the following: Cody Allen, Brad Brach, Zach Britton, Andrew Miller, or Adam Ottavino. Bolstering the bullpen seems to be the biggest need this offseason, and the Red Sox will have plenty of opportunities. The first objective is to re-sign Kimbrel and then hook one of the big fish in the reliever market to create a dominant bullpen.
- Boston signs a mid-level starter and enters 2019 with a rotation of Chris Sale, David Price, Rick Porcello, Eduardo Rodriguez, and one of the following: J.A. Happ, Charlie Morton, Gio Gonzalez, or Tyson Ross. If Eovaldi signs elsewhere, as I expect to happen, Boston will need to lock down their fifth starter. They could look internally with Brian Johnson, Hector Velazquez, or Steven Wright all netting a few starts in 2018, but I also think they view Johnson as a borderline major-leaguer and Velazquez and Wright as insurance arms rather than reliable starters.
So, if all goes according to (my) plan, the 2019 defending World Series champions will look as follows:
CATCHER - Sandy Leon, Christian Vazquez INFIELDER - Mitch Moreland, Dustin Pedroia, Xander Bogaerts, Rafael Devers, Brock Holt, Eduardo Nunez OUTFIELDER - Andrew Benintendi, Jackie Bradley Jr., Mookie Betts, J.D. Martinez, Blake Swihart STARTING PITCHER - Chris Sale, David Price, Rick Porcello, Eduardo Rodriguez, Tyson Ross RELIEF PITCHER - Craig Kimbrel, Matt Barnes, Ryan Brasier, Zach Britton, Joe Kelly, Tyler Thornburg, Hector Velazquez

Ike Davis has retired: And the Diamondbacks appear to be selling off: Arizona is one of the most poorly-run organizations in baseball since they won the WS. Every few years they sell off the players of value on the team and get players like Shelby Miller. Watch them deal Goldy to like the Red Sox for Devers. The rich always get richer in these situations.

Giants officially offered their president of baseball operations job to Farhan Zaidi.
Jump ship, friend!
Fully expecting to be disappointed, though.

Yanks re-sign C.C.
Gives you 3 starters sans Sonny Gray, so they still need 2 more good arms with one of them probably being Patrick Corbin if they decide to splurge on a pitcher

Bryce turned down $300 Million 10 year offer from Nats during the season That may seem bad to some, but that offer had no opt out. You ain't getting Bryce for that long with no opt out clause. You ain't getting any top player for that long with no opt out clause.

You ain't getting any top player for that long with no opt out clause. Agreed. No longer is it good enough to secure a player a long term guaranteed deal
In a deal that long it has to have at least an opt out if not 2
Also add on he will most likely surpass that deal with years and money if he wants it. Still think Philly breaks bank for him while ATL does the same for Machado

And trader Jerry makes the first move! *shocker*
C Mike Zunino, OF Guilhermo Heredia and minor-league LHP Michael Plassmeyer go to the Rays, with OF Mallex Smith and minor-league OF Jake Fraley coming to the M's.
Yes, the same Mallex Smith the M's traded a couple of off-seasons ago from the Braves for Luiz Gohara and then immediately traded to the Rays for Drew Smyly.

What’s the fascination with Bruce Harper? He had one great season four years ago and outside of that his career has been about as good as Trot Nixon.
