Oh yeah, definitely wanna see it. I think the last Pokemon game I played was Black/White, and my interest has waned over the games in general (was more of a Monster Rancher fan with regards to mon video games). Still, the kid who was me so many years ago, who saw the anime air here on TV for the first time, which was I recall 7:30 Friday nights is telling me to go watch the thing.
...also, crazy theory for a plot twist. The Pikachu is actually the missing father, due to some weird transformation shenanigans, or hell, psychic-type mind switcheroo. The father is missing. The Pikachu has amnesia. Coincidence? I think not!

The smile on my f***ing face after watching that trailer. I’m so excited!
I’m planning on basically living at the movies in 2019 it seems.

Honestly even if this movie winds up being awful in its own right (which I really don't see how it could be) it's probably going to be intensely watchable just due to how much background detail there is. It seems like it'd be so much fun just to watch and see what all cameos you can spot.

This looks good, but I still find it bizarre that THIS will be the first live action hollywood produced Pokemon movie.

This looks good, but I still find it bizarre that THIS will be the first live action hollywood produced Pokemon movie. When you think about it, not really. Like, if they did one based on the anime, you’d need to have condensed some of it down to two hours and then you’d have to figure out if you were casting 10 year olds or not and the ambiguous nature of the races of those characters would lead to them towing the line between whether it was right or wrong to cast them that way and online debates would rage either way and it wouldn’t be fun. Detective Pikachu on the other hand? Wasn’t a hot seller game wise but the game itself left things way more open to build a world around especially with the core concept. And if this one is successful, it leads stuff open to tell stories in that Pokémon world instead of recreating anime ones.

This looks good, but I still find it bizarre that THIS will be the first live action hollywood produced Pokemon movie. It was Pokemon Company's call. The studio wanted to do a more conventional game-based one but Pokemon Company preferred the idea of testing the waters with something with a smaller scale and centered on Pikachu.

So what's got bigger hype, this or Endgame?

So what's got bigger hype, this or Endgame? If you're talking on a general level it's definitely Endgame because it's going to make vastly more money, but on a personal level for me, it's Detective Pikachu and it isn't close.

Honestly I'm kind of expecting the movie to not actually end up answering the dad question since the game didn't. Yes, I know this is a VERY loose adaptation, but still, the impression I'm getting from all the actiony stuff is that they're going to wander into some much higher stakes then leave the father issue as a sequel hook.

Either way, I'm the first to speculate it here in the forums, so I have the right to rub it in on all your unclean, unwashed, dirty peasant faces if I turn out to be right, hah!

I'm in my 30s, I haven't played a full Pokemon mainline game since Red/Blue, and I'm not ashamed to say I think I'm anticipating this movie more than any other potential blockbuster-level flick on the horizon this year. Helps that my girlfriend is a huge Pokemon fan; given the story, PG-style presentation, and age of the protagonist in this movie I can't help but see this as an ode to the generation of fans who've grown into adulthood with the series, and am just anticipating a moment where a fully orchestrated version of the cartoon's US theme plays and a bunch of 20-somethings start cheering like crazy like they're 10 years old again.

I really don't think they could have designed live action Pokemon any better, they really knocked it out of the park.

I really don't think they could have designed live action Pokemon any better, they really knocked it out of the park. They really did do a great job walking the line on it. A lot of the time fan versions of live-action Pokemon tend to play up the realism to the point of being creepy, while this walks a good line between making them look somewhat grounded in reality while still for the most part being cute where appropriate.
