I'm 34, and I need to know the appeal of sad music in general. In my day 'sad music' were called 'ballads' and made you feel. (Some sad music was also called 'grunge' and were musically excellent. )

I listen to lots of sad music myself so I get the appeal, even if it's not a genre I'm into.

To me, it’s a tad bit catchy when you get used to it being fast food and nothing more. That and it just fits the mood sometimes. Especially when you’re going for a night drive. At least to me lmao

Sad music can be very therapeutic and helpful with dealing with depression. Mainstream rap has largely been a celebration of materialism and misogyny for a long time, but the winds are blowing towards people wanting something "deeper" (I know) and more relatable from their hippitty hop I suppose. Couldn't stay booty and money forever.

I could be wrong but it feels like a whole generation of rappers influenced by Kanye's 808s and Heartbreak album. I always liked that album but I know it was pretty polarizing when it came out.

Not familiar with the blues, man? Seattle bands? Nu Metal talking about growin up being bullied and suicidal thoughts? 90s industrial? Hair metal bands doing a ballad about loss/drugs/death? Hell, poetry in general?
Same deal.
Art in all forms should branch out to the full emotional spectrum.

It depends on the artist for me. But by and large, the new breed of rappers want to experiment musically more beyond the prior generation.
There are still plenty of lyrical acts doing big now like J. Cole, Joyner Lucas, Kendrick, etc. But the scene these days is focused on the delivery and flow of the raps as much (or more so) than the lyrics, the melodies and moods of the song (hence why there’s more people with singing deliveries today), and the charisma and personality of the artist.

Not a rap fan, but I do love lyrical dissonance. Happy, upbeat tunes about morbid shit is strangely enjoyable to me. Here's one of my favorites: And here's the lyrics: {Spoiler}And the night went on While all the stars are gone Another night all on her own
Those innocent eyes Won't ever tell any lies Who will ease this misery?
They will come again and touch me They will pay for satisfaction
Chorus: Everyday I'm waiting for someone I don't know Everyday I'm waiting for someone who will show That life means more than suffering Everyday I'm waiting for a healing touch
No parents left to guard me No idol left I'd like to be Selling my body is now my destiny
Chorus
I wonder if this circle can be broken I wonder if I ever sleep without a cry
They will come again and touch me They will pay for satisfaction
Chorus

Drake's sad stuff too. I can't see him without thinking of a joke someone made once, that if you get tears on a Drake CD, it unlocks bonus tracks.

NONE OF THOSE BANDS SOUNDED THE SAME, THEY WERE ALL JUST FROM THE SAME CITY" is what compelled you to write "Seattle bands".
