Well, OK.
I was born one week after ANH opened, family have told me it was the first movie I was taken to see. I have grown up with, lived, slept, breathed Star Wars my entire life. ANH remains my favorite movie of all time, can quote it and ESB like it was gospel.
So, yes, from the time I heard new movies were coming, I was hyped. Buying the toys, the book, the soundtrack. Joined a group of friends two WEEKS before the movie opened to camp out and be the first inside. I didn’t stay nights, but if I wasn’t in college classes or home sleeping, I was in line at the theater. We had a whole base camp set up with power strips, tents, TVs and computer.
We were nuts, but boy, was it fun.
So, we finally get in to see the movie at midnight first screening, the whole theater feels tensed like a muscle. We were cheering the Fox logo, the Lucasfilm logo... then the roof blew off for Star Wars to appear on the screen.
The first real sense of unease for me was when Jar Jar showed up. I was like... “Uhhhhh, this isn’t like Threepio or Artoo, this is just...” And yeah, problems galore with Kid Vader just messing with the tone. Oh yeah, pod race was cool but... I always found it kind of dull. Thank goodness for Duel of the Fates to give us some meat, I’ll say.
And yet... I saw the movie again the following evening with family. Travelled with my line friends to Hollywood to see it AGAIN at the Chinese. Travelled back to LA AGAIN to see it digitally.
I dunno if it’s all the investment I made or not talking, but... I don’t hate it. It’s a HUGE step down from the OT, be no doubt and it’s pretty dreadful scripting, Jar Jar is lousy and Kid Vader is too young. But thank GOD for Liam Neeson, Pernella August (who I still believe is overlooked as Shimi Skywalker) and Duel of the Fates, otherwise... yeah.
It did get better for AOTC and I love ROTS. But yeah, TPM remains, at best, a letdown. I’m still a fan, love the new stuff (except for that first 30 minutes of Solo giving me some very bad flashbacks) and I love to share. But I’ll understand if someone says I’m wrong. It’s a matter of opinion and my glasses are pretty tinted.
