Jessica Moss, Völur, Qarafa Date: Friday December 14th, 2018 Venue: Burdock in Toronto, Ontario Qarafa started out pretty slow but once they got going they were pretty cool. Their second song was way better because it actually had a beat. Bah, I won’t sugarcoat it; their first song was terrible. And they had a saxophone. I hate saxophone. I’ve seen Völur twice this year and both times they were pretty bad. But since this was a mellower venue, not suited for distortion or heaviness, they instead just played as a banjo and fiddle duo tonight (except the first song had stand-up bass) and they were much better than the other times I saw them this year. Their set kinda dragged but a couple of the songs earlier on in their set were really good. Jessica Moss started out a little slow with some traditional Jewish music then two of the Fractals songs from her latest album, but the second half of her set (which was the Particles song in full) was incredible. That half an hour made the whole night worth coming out for. This venue was SHIT. They put rows of chairs out and I had one in front at the beginning of the show but I got up to get a drink after Qarafa and some old lady had taken my seat. After that I just sat on the damn floor by the side of the stage. Getting back to the bar was a pain and they had five shitty craft beers on tap (the one I tried called “Vermont Blonde” was piss) and one okay red wine. I don’t want to go back.
