but he has made more money off his crazy gimmick then he ever dreamed of. I guarantee he made more off his original title run than he did his 90s return. I think he meant Backlund made more money during that period as a crazed heel than he would have imagined prior to going into his second run at the age of 40+, not necessarily the most money he EVER made in wrestling

I'm reminded of Foley in "Foley is Good" talking about how Bob was a nice guy, but also really, really weird and intensely sincere. I feel like he was able to really channel that strangeness into his 90s run perfectly. The way he ragdolled Lou was f***ed up. He felt bad having to do that, but it got the move over.

I probably should have been more clear about that, I wasn't saying that period he made more money than he did during his title run, I was saying at that point before he went crazy, he wasn't making any waves in the WWF and was probably regretting coming back.

I saw a Backlund promo from Pro Wrestling USA in 1984, he is a face but some of his lines are identical to stuff he said as a heel 10 years later, like he has higher standards than regular people.

What f***ed me off about Backlund was pushing him to the WWF Title (albeit transitional) days after Randy Savage left because they didn’t want to use him due to his age. He even then got a Mania match with Bret. Backlund was 3 years older than Savage. Bret himself was only 5 years younger than Savage also. Outrageous
Savage could have been in this role, who would snap better than Randy Savage. You get Savage/Bret at SS and Mania

Never have figured out how or why Bob got back into the game. Obviously, Vince was trying to stabilize after the steroid scandal, but why he looked Bob's way? Dunno. Backlund had been a virtual ghost in the industry for about seven years at that point. Maybe Vince just wanted some people on the roster he knew wouldn't get him put in another courtroom. Was it maybe a move to play off of the rejuvenation of another old vet in George Foreman's boxing career? Maybe they tried to push a parallel there of "The old guy who's been away for a while getting back in the game and excelling"? Yes. Absolutely. George Foreman's return to boxing, including a surprising face turn, was definitely a factor. Foreman got all kinds of mainstream publicity at the time. The WWF was looking to capture a little Foreman-echo of its own.

So Savage's position at the time was even more baffling

Well, they did tout him as an uncrowned champion for a while, since technically he never submitted to the camel clutch.

The way he ragdolled Lou was f***ed up. He felt bad having to do that, but it got the move over. I love Vince's "he's not even a wrestler!", the cameraman bailing out of the ring, and Savage being moved to take off his headset and try to help stop it. All just sells Bob and the move as sadistic.
