Imagine if someone had told you the night that Punk dropped the pipe bomb that it would lead to Triple H facing Kevin Nash in a ladder match. Probably one of the most bizarre butterfly effects in wrestling history.

because Triple H is a deeply petty man.

I love HHH but he KILLED that Punk story in 2011. He had no business being part of it. It should have been a full on feud between Punk and Cena through the rest of the year, ending with Cena turning heel going in to his angle with The Rock. Even if Punk dropped the Title to Cena and got it back again in November or December, it still wouldn't have hurt him or one of the best angles the company has ever had.

I don't have the numbers handy, but I wonder if WWE's booking in summer 2011 through the next year or so was the major catalyst that put the viewership decline into overdrive.
I mean, it wouldn't have started right away, since the buzz around the Punk angle could have supported things for awhile, but I wonder how many watched how that stretch of time culminated and after awhile arrived at the conclusion that "this company will never, ever change, I'm done."

I'm a big fan of Triple H and I don't really care for Punk. But, in all honesty, there was no reason for Triple H to go over at all.

About as much as pinning Brock in his third match back. (Yes I know everyone hates Brock now but in 2013 HHH did not need to be pinning returning big star and legit MMA guy Brock and giving him a 1-2 win loss record)

No.
F*** NO.
Just like in 2006 when he got the Wrestlemania Main Event that belonged to Edge, and in 2009 when he chewed up and spat Randy Orton out, Triple H prevented a dude from becoming a megastar. Look at the numbers before and after Night of Champions. Instead of beating Trips and getting even hotter, CM Punk lost, in what might as well have been clean.
Looking at that, you can totally understand the levels of resentment that Punk had towards Trips.

In theory the feud could've worked if they went in the direction of Punk being right and turning Hunter heel. WWE just messed it up completely to the point to where fans are still scratching their heads over it.

I think with Triple H’s job on the line they kind of had to have him win. It was a stupid stipulation that made the outcome sorta predictable. There was no direction for the story or Punk’s arc to go with him out of power. We saw it after the walkout and everything just fell apart after that.
Triple H tried to portray himself as two things at once: a more fan-friendly boss to contrast corrupt and out-of-touch Vince, but also still a cog in the establishment that Punk was fighting. It just didn’t work out.
At the very least, this could have been the time perfect to establish Laurinaitis as the true Big Bad of the arc and to turn Del Rio into his chosen champion. They could have made HHH a tweener, fighting off both anti-establishment faces like Punk from one side and disgruntled heels astroturfed by Laurinaitis on the other. Punk would have had to find a way to beat Triple H without playing into Johnny’s hands.
Maybe have him beat Triple H then realize that he’d been played by Johnny the whole time. Reveal that Johnny was the one who sent the text to Nash and the “Nash Texting Himself” thing was a red herring. Have Awesome Truth be part of Otunga’s big heel stable with Ziggler, Swagger, Rhodes, and Christian.

They wanted to keep me happy?
That's my actual suggestion. I loved it but even I can see what a bad choice they made booking wise. The only rational explanation is someone wanted me to be a happy little mark.

I don't think it was malicious, it's incompetence. They looked at Punk at whatever level they looked at him, let's say B level, who got hot, but would eventually cool off, because hell, they didn't get him; so they have him face a legend, an A player, like HHH, and even though he won't win, just by the nature of being brought up to Hunter's level will do more good for Punks long term plans than booking him hot.

Didn’t he also apologize to HHH the night after for being wrong about him, or am I misremembering that?
Great storyline, horrible execution when Trips got involved but that’s not really surprising given his history.

Granted, I felt the whole Summer of Punk 2.0 was booked completely wrong.
Here's how I felt it should've went down:
Everything up to MiTB was fine. Punk wins, leaves with the WWE Championship.
They continue with the Vince is relieved of his duties, Triple H is in charge. They continue with the WWE Championship tournament.
However, stretch the tournament out. Have qualifiers, make it a 16-Man tournament, whatever. And all the while, have the announcers state that Triple H is working on trying to get CM Punk back. And have him make appearances on the indy circuit and so forth. Make it look legit that he's gone. And if they can't get Punk back, then the tournament crowns a new WWE Champion.
Then, at SummerSlam, they crown the new WWE Champion in the tournament finals. Have it be John Cena. Then, after he wins, then Cult of Personality hits, and out walks CM Punk with his WWE Championship.
They feud until the September Pay-Per-View, with Cena telling people he's the rightful WWE Champion, he won the tournament. But people keep reminding him, "But you didn't beat CM Punk." It eats away at him, until Trips comes up with the Winner Take All match for the WWE Championship.
Punk wins, leading Cena down the road to his feud with The Rock. Punk could still feud with Del Rio for the title as well. Just get rid of the stupidity with Nash, and the whole walkout crap, as that made no sense.

Hell, here's two little things I'd change to improve the whole thing - have Miz win the tournament then lose the belt to Cena instead of Mysterio then have SummerSlam be a triple threat match where Cena pins Miz with his foot on the ropes. There, Punk now has reason to think Triple H screwed him over and Miz thinking there's a conspiracy against him now makes complete sense.

No. If Punk had won it still would have been a ridiculous and unnnecessary distraction but that is what it is. Him losing was just..... all the facepalms, why....

They kind of wrote themselves into a corner on it between the Triple H's job on the line stipulation and just making Punk a horribly unlikable character at that point who needed some humbling. They could've saved it if they had just committed to turning Triple H heel then but they didn't so instead you got Punk railing against a system that was being perfectly reasonable toward him. Seriously... the story being told was pretty blatantly HHH was turning heel... and they just never pulled the trigger on it... the only way it works otherwise is the REAL person behind the texting causes a double DQ somehow.... so they don't need HHH to lose due to the job stipulation and CM Punk can move on to fighting the real enemy type deal.
