I mean it had been going down for a while, pretty much every FPS released in the last 10-15 years has been hard to master for me (why exactly is the shoot button always the back right shoulder button now, seems like a weird place for the "main button") but today I played PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds, or PUBG, for the first time, and it couldn't have gone more poorly.
I create my character no problem, and wait for the countdown for the game to start (it needs a countdown to prepare myself and the rest of the 100 players playing this online battle). After the countdown finishes, I see some plane flying. I'm staring at it for like 20 seconds before I realize you're supposed to jump out of the plane, then when you're about halfway down, deploy your own parachute. They give you a hard-to-see indicator on screen to 'press B' to exit the plane, then zero indicator on where, when or how to release your parachute, so the game literally just drops you in. Literally. Figuratively and literally.
Anyway, eventually landed onto the battle field, spent 2 solid minutes trying to find any gun or weapon, couldn't, subsequently died in the game with the bullets of a much better player of this game.
Whatever, the game was free anyway for me to download, and my 13 year old nephew is visiting very soon for the holidays, he'll enjoy playing said game while he's here. As for myself, for like the past 10-15 years I've mostly only been interested in the genres of fighting/wrestling/sports games, as well as any of Nintendo's first party greatness. Y'all can enjoy your Pub-Gee, tyvm.

I tried out Fortnite, I found it to be kind of bland. It's no where near Quake, Goldeneye, Timesplitters, Team Fortress, COD4 or Battlefield 1. Apart from the parachute onto the island and dancing I don't see why it has so much buzz. (Well except it is free ) Then again I think my interest in FPS games has waned over the years. I dislike team based deathmatches and there are not enough FPS games with weird/daft guns.

That genre has obviously changed but at least you aren't like a friend of mine who literally thinks every game that comes out now sucks. He has turned into an old man who hates everything, like he was literally bitching about games being sci-fy then he bitches that there are remakes and that sucks too.
Literally hates everything.

You know what? I've been finding very much the same thing for entirely different reasons. I can usually get a handle on most games pretty quickly, and am not afraid to go online and see walkthroughs if I get stumped at a certain point. My issue is that, whenever I play a first-person or third-person style game (anything but a platformer, a Diablo-style aerial game, or a sports/fighting game), my throat starts to tighten. I always keep a glass of water nearby because I find that helps, but I can never play games like that for too long before needing to rest or play something a little more palatable. I'm wondering if it's some sort of game-induced vertigo-type reaction, but would never diagnose myself and wouldn't know where to begin to get someone else to diagnose me. It's just... weird.
This last happened a couple weeks ago. I played some WWF No Mercy just fine. Put in Mario Bros. 64 and had to stop after 10 minutes. Yeah, I blame it on getting old.

Look, don't blame yourself for the problems with first person shooters. Everybody knows that the FPS genre of video games peaked with Hogan's Alley in 1984 and everything since then has just been a sad attempt to re-capture that magic.

Your first mistake was trying to play a video game with other humans.

I forgot Left 4 Dead, that was the exception to my normal dislike of team fps. Loved that game. (Not the sequel though).

Speaking as someone who has practically no interest in playing the game, I can see why it gained such a foothold compared to the other Battle Royale type games. It has an identity. PUBG and so many of the others look pretty generic in terms of the assets they use, but Fortnite is bright, colourful, visually distinctive. It takes what worked from its previous formula and applied it to this genre early enough to be the first one to really stand out. And as much as it's getting sued for the dances it stole, that added to the appeal for many in a similar way.

Only FPS I am lookin forward to is Borderlands 3 because I tried Fortnite....and then realized people can pretty much kill u from across the map and u will never see where the shot comes from so even if u survive , getting revenge is next to impossible because again can't see where the shot comes from.
But overall age has not caught up with me yet....although going back to something like No Mercy on N64 the game plays so much faster or atleast it seems so.

Most of these games require you to move and shoot, which would also be impossible if the shoot button required you to take your thumb off the stick.

I haven’t really enjoyed a FPS either on line or single player since BLOPS 2.
I liked GTA 5 and loving RDR2. I like playing at my own speed so games like Skyrim and Fallout have been my go to.
GTA V online was actually pretty fun because even if you’re getting slaughtered it’s not a match where you feel you’re ever losing.

I became too old for video games by the time I was like 17 in the late-90's. They just got too complicated for me. Give me a simple platformer like Super Mario Bros. any day.

I like Fortnite and I'll play it from time to time, but I am way too casual to actually *win* a match, lol. I'll see YouTube videos of people crafting huge structures and having pretty intense looking gun fights and I'm just like "Nah, won't be winning that".

It's caught on for a lot of the same reasons why games like TF2 and Overwatch caught on: unique identities and standout visual styles that separate them from the typical brown-and-grey more "realistic" shooters out there. And being fun games of course. Granted I can't say that about Fortnite firsthand as I've never played it. I also play FPS on PC so I'm still using WASD+Mouse versus a controller.

I don’t play any battle royale games because I’ve never liked playing online with others even when I was a teenager but I don’t consider them actual FPS

Also if you want a really good, modern FPS, play the new DOOM. It's fantastic.
