I don't know if I can call it underrated. I think it gets the credit it deserves as a legendary moment. It's underrated by the WWE, though. They like to say that DX started the Attitude Era, ignoring the Austin vs Bret feud and this promo. I will always say that the Attitude Era began in 1996 with Austin vs Bret.

"You know why they call you Stone Cold? Because your stones are so cold, you can't come out here and step into this ring with me." When you think you have a brilliant comeback on the spot, but it immediately starts falling apart the moment you start saying it. hahah. Bret Hart never had a great wit but his conviction compensated for that. I dunno I think El Dandy liked his humour 😏

Can anyone pull this off today? A promo about being screwed? This sounded more real than phony and I don't know if a Seth or Dean could pull thiss off. Balor though.... He has been screwed by everyone! The Rocks heel turn promo was fairly real. Being outraged with the fans at the Rocky sucks chants when he's busting his arse every night must have hurt.

Can anyone pull this off today? It can't be pulled off because every authority figure in the WWE has to look strong. HHH would never allow himself to look the way Vince looks in that segment, and I don't think Vince would do it anymore.

I doubt it could be pulled off today because the turn would happen on a Raw with little to no build followed by a match on some throwaway PPV. No chance of a slow build.
Bret was really subtley playing up not understanding the crowd's reaction to Austin and HBK in the months before this, he couldn't understand why they were getting cheered despite all the douchebag things they were doing.
I've recently been watching every Raw following Survivor Series 96 (currently on the Backlash 99 Raws) and they're just amazing. I wish WWE would look back on them and take some notes to apply today.

They should watch the Austin vs Bret feud, to show them how to do Seth vs Dean. The very first match Austin and Bret had, started with a lockup, but every other time they crossed paths, it was just all out balls to the wall fighting.

Also, because authority figures are more active now, if they weren't actively trying to screw the guy before, they would after so it'd be entirely justified. In 1997 Vince was just a guy behind the scenes so you could play that double edge of Bret legitimately getting screwed by interference, but being whiny because management had 0 to do with any of it.

I believed Bret was legit upset as you never heard him curse after a loss, but since he had been screwed over so many times in the months leading up to it, he couldn't hold it in anymore. Fuuny enough, this applies to kayfabe and Bret's personal story for the last 4 years. All of his Title loses, up to that point, had some sort of BS involved. Fuji with the salt, Owen with his false tears, Overtime with the Iron Man match, Austin being a dick. And there was always someone stealing his thunder/crapping on him: Hogan, Lawler, Owen, Austin, HBK, Backlund. Bret just got tired. Yeah he was getting hit from all sides: -HBK accidentally screwing Bret Hart out of the WWF title at In Your House: It's time in December 96 -Bret eliminating Austin from the 97 Rumble but since the ref didn't see it, it didn't count so Austin sneaks back in and wins the Rumble which causes Bret to become livid -Bret wins a grueling Final Four match in February 97 for the vacated WWF title which finally gets him the belt he worked so hard for which leads to.. -Bret defending the WWF title the next night on Raw against a fresh Sycho Sid and loses the title via interference from Austin -Bret gets one more shot at the title in a cage match where he has one final shot before Mania to get the belt back and fails in the attempt even with Austin which causes him to go over the top and lose his shit cursing up a storm

Hhh has done this a lot actually its the family he married into that refuses to get theirs.

Listen to Austin. He's just done with Bret. He really puts over how his chances at the title was dashed as well while still being an asshole to Bret. Not in the clip, but Sid is the only one being honest when he yells "I don't know shit". Well he does have half the brain that you do.
