Because in their own very words "Fans would lose interest."
Safe to say that fans lost interest in watching him choke a long time ago.

I am waiting for the inevitable depressing end
Ash has been in a coma the entire time and all his adventures were his dream...hence why he never grows up and is always the main character.
He never comes out of the coma

I've always just had the impression Ash was supposed to be kindof an "every man" or "...child" for fans. He can get angry (specifically when rivals are involved), but he's always pretty neutral in his temperament compared to those around him.
I feel like YuGiOh's protags are the same, except they just try to add a new one for each new world they build it in. GX took place at a school for dueling, 5Ds took place in a "bad future" version of the world, and so on. Different environments, different motivations, different everything. The only real common denominator is that Duel Monsters played a big role in whatever was going on. Pokemon on the other hand has different regions with different appearances and themes, but it's still about getting [X] badges to go to that region's Pokemon League. So while many of the protags have the same positive "do your best" outlook in YuGiOh, the environment totally changes each show. Moving the same Yugi from the original show to GX's academy (and having to pretend he has to start at the bottom) wouldn't work. Jaden in 5Ds' dystopia wouldn't work.

Speaking as someone who has never watched Pokémon, I ask: is Ash even over? Like, surely the Pokémon are the draw. Who gives a shit about the dopey kid that’s controlling them?

What I love about YuGioh building on what you said about different motivations etc that every new world builds is that even just within the seasonal arcs...they go to different places which fundemantally builds on the characters change and growth they experience different things....even if the core of duel monsters never changes but there is a sense of growth for the characters from the beginning of every season to the end Which I never get from Pokemon

He had a wild Pikachi who had to learn to love him, a rival in Gary, and the crazy task of getting all 8 gym badges and go against the Elite 4 to be the "Pokemon Master"
After you start creating different regions and changing his motivations shit goes left. Pikachi became the mascot into the series and then you had Pokemon like Mewtwo and other legionaries that came later that means more than Ash

Wasn’t the first episode something about him looking for his dad or something? It’s been like 20 years! They still didn’t get to that?

So he still hasnt won a Pokemon League?
Did he ever go back to get Primeape? I hated Ash for leaving him behind. Primeape was great.

But the post-Yugi shows weren't as big as the Yugi show. So I assume thats why Pokemon doesn't want to go that route.

I'd be interested in seeing an anime in Alola featuring the adventures of Red as a grown ass man.
