There were widespread "The ultimate warrior died and was replaced" rumors running rampant in the late 80s early 90s. I've heard there are variations where some say there were at least three warriors. Some have even said it was now Kerry von erich. Impressive how rumors circulated in an era with no internet.
When did these rumors start? Any other details you've heard and how adamant about it were people you've talked to? Did wwe ever acknowledge the rumors even in a joking manner years later?

WWE acknowledged the rumor on the Self Destruction dvd. Jim Ross said that the fans thought it was a different person because Warrior was smaller and wore a fake muscle shirt when he returned, JR joked about Warrior not hitting the gym hard during his sabbatical, implying he was out of roids.

Kind of OT, but a friend of mine as a kid said that Macho Man died and the one in WCW was a new one.

I remember as a kid my cousin trying to feed this rumor to me in early 1990 during the build-up to WrestleMania VI. I might've believe him if he wasn't already such a giant liar.

Kind of OT, but a friend of mine as a kid said that Macho Man died and the one in WCW was a new one. Well I prefer to think that the Team Madness mid life crisis guy was an impersonator and not the real Macho Man. Man that run was pathetic.

Kind of OT, but a friend of mine as a kid said that Macho Man died and the one in WCW was a new one. A guy I knew (RIP Chubby) once told me he overheard a wrestler at a Stampede Wrestling show complaining that he had to wrestle against "the other Macho Man" on a WWF tour through Canada, in the early 90s. His father worked at the building Stampede taped TV at, and he had a ton of great photos of him with wrestlers... always assumed he just mis-heard who the wrestler was talking about.

Kind of OT, but a friend of mine as a kid said that Macho Man died and the one in WCW was a new one. I saw someone in the youtube comment sections once insisting that Hector Guerrero was Eddie, and that WWE owned "Eddie Guerrero", fired him, and just claimed he died.

I remember the rumors. There were a few things people pointed out as to why they believed it was someone else. His smaller build, he stopped doing the gorilla press, he cut his hair, etc. I never bought into that talk because you could see in his face that it was the same guy. His voice was the same too.

Hmmm doesn't much look like the original Warrior to me now!

I remember a rumor I heard was that the original Kane died and was replaced with Glen Jacobs in 2003.

Embarrassing confession: In the midst of Raven's WCW run, my brother told me Raven was the same guy who played the Warrior just without the face paint and I believed him.

I had a friend who told me that Warrior died right before Wrestlemania VI. Which didn't make sense at all since he looked the same.

The real Ultimate Warrior is held in the dungeons of Titan Towers.

Not so much a rumor, but something I fell for as a kid. My mom (who has never been a wrestling fan) walked by the TV one day and disgustedly remarked that Shawn Michaels looked like he was a dancer for Chippendales. I misheard her and thought she meant he actually was, so I went to school and told everyone. Then, when I got the internet a few years later, I was confused when I couldn't find anything about HBK's former life as a male stripper.

My grandpa (RIP) believed that rumor til he died and insisted that it wasn't the real UW that was at the HOF/Raw.

I remember a rumor I heard was that the original Kane died and was replaced with Glen Jacobs in 2003. I also heard a variation that the original Kane became Abyss.
