Based on all the mannequins in the basement I’m guessing he was a high end fashion designer

Once more: it was Kevin's Uncle Rob that was fitting the bill for the trip, the one that moved to Paris from New York for work, not Peter (Kevin's dad). A deleted scene even has he and his family arriving to pick everyone up at the airport (@6:01 if the link is broken):
Second, the house was certainly high-end, but if they picked it up for a steal at the tail end of the 80s housing market crash, depending on what kind of connections the McAllister's had they could have gotten it for a fairly good price (the real house sold in the late 80s for $875,000, still high but not unreasonable). Could've been a banker, could've been a day trader, all we know is he obviously is a smart frugal guy because he can own a house like that and still freak out about a nearly $1,000 room service bill in New York when that clearly could've cost so much more given the circumstances.

Rob is definitely rich, he has a house in NY as well, but Peter is definitely well off too. In Lost in NY, he pays for the Florida vacation himself since Frank says Peter is paying good money for their vacation.

Such a big house but didn't two of the brothers have to share a room?

Wait, 9 people? I thought it was something like 15 in the movie. It was 15. 4 parents with 10 kids between them and Heather, who I believe was Peter and Frank's niece.

Wait, 9 people? I thought it was something like 15 in the movie. Indeed it was. “There are 15 people in this house and you’re the only one who has to make trouble.” According to Cousin Heather, the breakdown is: “five boys, six girls, four parents, two drivers, and a partridge in a pear tree.” (Obviously the shuttle drivers don’t count, but it’s part of the quote so I left it in.) Yeah, I’ve seen this movie waaaay too much. One of my Facebook friends made a comment similar to the thread title, and I also pointed out that it was Uncle Rob who paid for the Paris trip.

The guy who does Cinema Sins makes a good point- how come the parents are the only ones who have an alarm clock in the whole house? None of the other kids had one and could set it to make sure they get up on time? Plenty of them are old enough to know to do that.

The power outage that knocked out the parents' clock would have reset all those as well. Unless one of them was a naturally early riser, they'd have had the exact same problem.

As a kid, I wanted to own that house. Now as an adult who will have issues getting up the stairs when I'm older, not so much.

So nobody had a battery powered alarm clock? Or one of those old fashioned wind up bell alarm cocks? A wake up phone call? As someone that has done some overseas travel you always have a back up.... and I usually wake up about hour before the alarm goes off anyway... because I’m about to get on a plane and I’m excited 😆

They fell for Harry's fake police officer after all.
