Meltzer mentioned on Wrestling Observer Radio that Ronda/Natalya on RAW was called on the fly. The reason was that they focused on planning the gauntlet match earlier in the night and didn't have the time for the title match and figured that Natalya was prepared to lead Ronda since she knows her so well.

Having not seen it, how did they do? Nattie is one of my least favorites, but even I have to say it was a pretty good match.

Good. Ronda needed the experience and it just increases her workrate and ability. I didn't watch the match but I'm assuming it was good.

Good for Ronda to get some experience and Natalya is a great person to learn from.

I guess that explains why Ronda broke the hold before Nattie actually tapped.

I guess that explains why Ronda broke the hold before Nattie actually tapped. To be fair, Cole made that call before Nattie actually tapped.

Nattie is the perfect teacher for that Her work rate is good, she gets how to wrestle but she can be a great great wrestler more so if she can get it on the fly tho that’s not necessarily something she has to learn to be successful

Nattie’s gonna be a hell of a trainer. She might not be the best to teach promo or personality class, but she’s really good at fundamentals and helping newbies out. Can’t think of anyone who’s had a bad thing to say about her as a person either.

No one better to learn on the fly from. If Sara Amato ever needs some help training at the PC, Nattie can definitely do it.

I didn’t watch it. But since it was taped they could edit it if need be, probably helped make that decision .

They also probably didn’t want to throw too much at Ronda as she was spending the whole week before the TLC ppv practicing her match with Nia and that match was way more important than a taped Christmas raw match.Ronda should be doing more of this seeing she’s a full timer she needs to learn how to work and not practice and doing it with nattie someone she’s comfortable with who has a ton of experience is way better than when they’ve thrown Ronda out with Alicia Fox or Alexa and it’s been pretty crappy and if they want Ronda to be the star they want her to be they need to be super smart how they handle her as she’s shown she can be really good when practicing matches over and over ahead of time just imagine how good she could be if she had an actual clue what she was doing?
They need to play to her strengths less talking less acting more being a bad ass.

Nattie's one of the easiest people to get along with and a technically sound wrestler. It wouldn't shock me if when she wants to hang it up she becomes a PC Trainer, she'd be valuable in that role.

From what I read about the match, the first part of it was Natalya taking advantage of the fact that Ronda was reluctant to hurt her friend. It makes sense that if they had to do this on the fly they'd go with that. Narratively it works and it gives Ronda a reason to not be too smooth at first or seem comfortable. I didn't see the actual match, just read about it and a highlight or two but people seem somewhat positive about it.

Nattie is so great in the ring I can't think of five matches in her ten year run on the main roster that I would consider good or memorable

Nattie is so great in the ring I can't think of five matches in her ten year run on the main roster that I would consider good or memorable About seven of those years were spent working with the likes of Kelly Kelly, Brie Bella, Maria, and Rosa Mendes. Ever since they started caring about women's matches I can't think of many Natalya matches that I wouldn't consider good.

Nattie: What are we supposed to do in our match tonight?
All: Go away, Nattie.
Nattie: But we're the main event!
All: *all start tapping on a sign that says 'Go away, Nattie'*
