I’d actually heard this from WrestleCrap Radio many years back when they had Mates on their show. His understanding of their reasoning of why they went with Triple H over Van Dam wasn’t anything personal to Van Dam, it was that WWE felt the new belt would be better consolidated with an established main-eventer, in this case Triple H, as the first champion. It’s the kind of thing that sounds like it makes sense, but also sounds like peak Triple H logic. All the decisions made back in the day to protect the credibility of the titles. Makes you wonder if they see the universal title and wwe champion Jinder and wonder why they bothered.

They should have made more of an effort to make the two shows distinctive. Move one into smaller ECW type arenas, get a completely different production crew. Have a whole new announce team. Make it feel, look and sound like a separate brand. There was far too much overlap with on screen talent also. At first in the brand split they did share Womens and Undisputed champ, but after Summerslam when they added the World there was very little mixing of talent. Announce teams were the same. Production crew I do agree with, a different look beyond just color and set would have been nice. As for smaller venues limiting your live gate seems like throwing away money (WCW Road Wild).
