RIP Daryl Dragon (Captain and Tenille)

Daryl Dragon, "The Captain" of singing duo Captain and Tennille, died early Wednesday morning ... and love really did keep them together to the very end.

Daryl's publicist says the musician died of renal failure in Arizona, and was in hospice care at the time.

Daryl and Toni Tennille were famous for cranking out huge hits in the '70s, including "Do That to Me One More Time," "Muskrat Love" and "Love Will Keep Us Together." The duo was actually a couple -- they married in 1975. They landed their own TV variety show the next year.

Sadly, my favorite Captain and Tenille moment didn't involve him: Tenille was onstage at some awards show and they announced the Captain, but instead Captain Kangaroo came onstage.

Not my type of music, but they made a pretty big dent in pop culture during their peak. Man, 2019 ain't starting off easy, is it?

The way Wikipedia* describes events, she divorced him in 2014 due to something regarding health issues and/or insurance and that they remained good friends afterward. Almost sounds like it was motivated to get around some sort of red tape regarding Dragon's deteriorating health over the years.

Aside from Love Will Keep Us Together, Captain was more pop culture figure for a time than artist, but still, it is sad to see anyone loved go.

RIP. Daryl was associated with the Beach Boys near the beginning of his career. He wrote a pretty decent song with Dennis Wilson called "Sound of Free" which came out in 1970 (he was credited as Rumbo):

For some reason I thought he did some work on Wilson's great solo album Pacific Ocean Blue but I guess he didn't after doing some researching. Probably was too big at that point by 77.

Like I said, don't know much about them, but if you're leaving the name Dragon on the table to go with the Captain, you must be f***ing badass.

I'm familiar with their 70's music... I can't say I'm a fan but they wrote songs that had the kind of staying power that few do. Lots of respect for being able to craft something that lasts like their music.

I heard a local (Providence RI) radio guy, who's also an anchor for the local NBC station, talking about their divorce this morning. He was citing some old interview (I assume with Tennille) who said that they had a "loveless" marriage - not very intimate at all, but it's like they were just friends who decided to get hitched and remained platonic the whole time. He didn't mention how long they'd been married (based on what he said I just assumed they divorced long ago), so color me surprised when I found out they were married almost *40* years and it only ended this decade.

That said, despite the divorce they remained friends, and when he died yesterday she was at his bedside.
