My mom has hated Bruce Springsteen since the late 70s. She also loves the song "Walk of Life." This led to following conversation: Mom: That "Woo Hoo" song [Walk of Life] is great. Too bad I can't like it. Me: Why? Mom: I refuse to give Springsteen any of my money. Me: But that's not Springsteen. It's Dire Straits. Mom: That's his band. Me: No... You're thinking of the East Street Band. Dire Straits is English. Mom: But Springsteen had something to do with it. I can hear him. Me: No he didn't and no you can't. Mom: He's in there somewhere. It took me fifteen YEARS to convince her that Bruce Springsteen had no connection to either "Walk of Life" or Dire Straits. Don't ever let her listen to John Cafferty's "On the Darkside", then.

For years, I thought that REM did the decent version of 'Mad World'.

Another one I thought “If I Leave” by O.M.D was a song by The Cure.

Yeah, the production sounds like one of Billy's songs. I would have thought it was him, too.

Continuing the Iggy theme, I had 'A Girl Like You' by Edwyn Collins filed under Iggy Pop on my iTunes for actual years. Only discovered the truth when it randomly came on the radio last year. I blame Limewire 🙉

I was convinced for years that 'Walking In Memphis' was a Springsteen song. That's understandable- it sure sounds like one. ...I could not be more baffled by both of these posts.

For years, I thought that REM did the decent version of 'Mad World'. Which version would you say was decent? I think the Tears for Fears original is excellent and the Andrews/Jules cover is one of the best covers ever.

I used to think that Joe Jackson's "Is He Really Going Out With Him" was the Cars for a long time. For some reason I also used to think The Breakup Song by Greg Kihn was by the Ramones (dont ask me why). More recently, I thought that Heroes by Shinedown was by Godsmack.

Probably a confusion on the name, but I grew up thinking "Cat's in the Cradle" was by Cat Stevens.

I thought Van Morrison's "Brown Eyed Girl" was done by The Rolling Stones. It was only about 5 years ago when I realized Roy Orbison didn’t sing it...

All 4 One's covers of "I Swear" and "I Can Love You Like That". At a time when Boyz II Men were scoring R&B/pop ballads left and right, it's very easy to get confused with both groups sounding alike.

Well until Todd in the Shadows did his One Hit Wonderland on it, I genuinely thought that Lovefool by The Cardigans was a No Doubt song.

Probably a confusion on the name, but I grew up thinking "Cat's in the Cradle" was by Cat Stevens. I think a ton of people thought or still think that.

I blame Limewire 🙉 Speaking of Limewire: Frequently credited to Marilyn Manson and Orgy, who actually do partially cover that song:
